Quality issues
Besides that, there are exceptions to every rule. Even the most unreliable car will have some builds that don't seem to have many issues (or the issues it has are negligible to the owner), and even the most undependable manufacturer will put out some car models that have above average reliability. The opposite is of course also true.
Like a previous poster stated. Make dial is pointed directly forward. That should tilt it back down. Now, PUSH the dial UP and that should close it completely.
I think you'll find, by and large, that 2IS owners are very happy with their purchase. The overall quality of the cars is outstanding, barring a few growing pains that they've probably ironed out from the '06 line.
Here's a link to the 250/350 owner's manual online in PDF format. If what I said above doesn't help, consult that.

Very nice to hear that you're conscientious about property that is not your own. I wish there were more people in this world like that. There's definitely a shortage of them (as evidenced by the number of posts about door dings, break-ins and hit-and-runs on this forum).

I had a lot of issues with my moonroof when i first got the 350. over time i realized that it was due to how accustomed i was to how my previous moonroofs had worked. this may be the case with you as well, since you are coming from a different luxury car. one thing that is obnoxious about my lexus is that when i shut the car down, it seems to shut off all the power, including windows, radio, etc. it seems you can still shut the moonroof, but not if you've opened the door. there were a few times where my roof was stuck on tilt, and i had to restart the car completely, move the switch from closed back to tilt then back to closed again before it would close. i guess it's just a downside to having a dial system instead of what the mercedes have.
as with most japanese cars, all power is cut from the car when you turn the engine off and open the door. should you open the door, you would need to press the start button twice to activate power to the accessories. if you do not open the door, power is still active to the windows for a set period of time, after which you will not be able to use the windows until you press the start button twice.
However as I'm shutting down the loaner for the night I tried to shut the moon roof and it will not shut. I've spent the last 20 minutes trying with no luck. It wants to stay in the tilt up mode.

This morning I went out and started the car and the roof closed perfectly as it should. No idea why it wouldn't last night but working fine now!

I pushed the button (pointed forward) and the roof opened. I closed it by pushing the button again. I turned it so the tilt feature engaged. From there nothing I could do would make it close. It would close up and open right back in the tilt up mold. This morning I went out, started the car, turned the **** and it closed shut. No idea why this didn't happen last night..
My first post mentioned that my rear view mirror would not dim. Lexus called today and told me they had to order out a new mirror. Soooooooooo, I'm still driving the IS350 around. For me I'm really glad I saved the bucks and picked the IS250. Unless you live for 0-60 runs they drive the same and I'm 2/3 grand ahead. Right choice for me however there was a time when I too would have to have the 'big' motor.
The mechanic told me this is the FIRST mirror he has ever replaced. Never, ever happens.......according to him. I don't fault the car or feel I have a lemon in any way. I'm sure the car will turn out to be a winner overall.
The only reason I even brought it up was this is a Lexus forum and I'm just sharing my experience with the car up to now. Every time I hit the start button I know I made a good choice...
A few years back I ventured on this site and commented about the various problems I had experienced with my 2002 Mercedes C-230. I must have had twenty hits telling me how great the Lexus brand was and they never have a problem, yada, yada, yada. So I listened to you guys and here's what happened since.
Well, I've had my new 2006 IS250 for less than a month and it's in the shop with a mirror that does not dim as it should. No big deal really and I'm driving a new IS350 around. However as I'm shutting down the loaner for the night I tried to shut the moonroof and it will not shut. I've spent the last 20 minutes trying with no luck. It wants to stay in the tilt up mode. The loaner has only 175 miles on the clock and was built back in May while mine was built in July. Both were put together in the 'famous' Tahara plant.
What's up with that?

If you want to talk about reliability, let me share my experience with my '98 Cadillac Catera, which was consistently at the bottom of Consumer Reports reliability ratings. Without fail, every 3 months or 3000 miles, whichever came first, the car was in for some warranty repair. I knew whenever an oil change was coming up that I should keep driving the car until something else malfunctioned because it would be one less trip to the dealer.
Talk to us again in six months and let us know if you have any other problems with your IS besides the mirror. I'm confident that unless you are the type to whine about "wrinkles in your leather seats", that you'll be saying how pleased you are with your IS.
