Default Plate transfer fee and tires tax?????

Guys. I'm very excited. I'm going to pick up the my IS350 red/black sports/nav this Saturday. I'm from New York City, and I'm getting it at Lawrence Lexus in New Jersey. Sales dude told me that I need to pay the tires tax of $7.50? What kind of tax is that? In addition, I already have a NY plate, and I would like to transfer it to the new car. Sales dude told me the charge is $259. WOW? that much??? What's the deal here? Is he trying to make more $ from me out of the fee?? This is my first time getting a new car. Please advise.

Each state varies...in CT a new plate registration was something like $280, but transferring my old car's plate to the IS was only $80 or so.

Never heard of the tire tax.

The tire tax is legitimate. It's $1.50 per tire, for any tire sold in the state of NJ. You'd pay it at a tire store too.

On my invoice for my 06 GX470, I was charged a $2.50 per tire NYS waste tire fee, so you are getting a bargain. I paid $12.50 total for the waste tire fee. Maybe NJ has a lower fee. But that $259.00 transfer plate fee is real high. But thay are probably charging you the round trip fee from Lawrenceville, NJ to the NY DMV to pay for gas, tolls, wear and tear and driver fee. Still sounds way to high. But I believe the dealerships do this through the mail or they have an outside company that handles out of state DMV services.
