You're going to need to purchase a analog to digital video converter. There's quite a few on the market. The easiest ones are the USB models, so you don't even have to open up your computer. With one of these converters, you play your VHS into the converter and it creates a file on your computer. Usually they let you choose the format - AVI. WMV, MPG4, etc. You have to make a choice on file size verses quality. Oh, and if you use a USB model make sure you have USB2 on your computer. The original USB just doesn't have enough bandwidth.

Hey Thanks a bunch for the info... what format do you prefer? Also, what's the quickes way to find out whether I have USB or USB2 on my Dell Dimension 4500? Can I tell by looking at the computer? Would I simply need to call dell? The hard drive is about 4 years old or so...
Thx in advance!
While we're on the compression topic, anyone know what the best way is to convert from vhs to digital? I'm trying to put vhs on my computer..
If you have a Tivo it would be pretty easy to hit play on the vcr and record the show onto your tivo. then you use tivo-to-go to save the show to your computer.
cant you just transfer from the tivo to the pc? this is one reason to get your tivo hacked if youve got usb ports on it.
yes you can move files off the tivo and onto your pc without hacking or using the usb ports, it's done over the home network....officially supported as "tivo to go."
