Default What Does IS Stand For?

Everyone has been guessing what the IS stands for......now we don't need to guess.

IS = Intelligent Sport

It was said in the video section

Someone posted on this a while back... this is what I think the cars names stand for:

Remember, anything with X in it is usually AWD, although that doesn't apply in the RX's case.

IS = International Sedan
SC = Sports Coupe
LS = Long or Luxury Sedan
ES = Executive Sedan
GS = Grand Sedan
RX = Rally AWD
LX = Large AWD
GX = Grand AWD

I don't know if any of these are right (besides SC, that would be my best guess out of all of those).

I think it's International because it was aimed to be a pretty big sport sedan hit aimed at the 3 series (which it fell short of the first time around, unfortunately), and the 3 series is a major vehicle everywhere around the world.

Lexus claims:
IS - Intelligent Sport
LS - Luxury Sedan
ES - Executive Sedan
GS - Grand Sedan (Some say Grand Sport, but Lexus sticks with Grand Sedan)
SC - Sports Coupe (Some say with the new SC, it stands for Sports Convertible, but I think it's Sports Coupe)

As for SUV's, I agree that X denotes AWD, as it does with several other car makes (G35x, awd sedan)
The first letter I always believed told the tale of size, where the higher the letter, the bigger the size, until the RX botched that theory
RX - Rally AWD sounds right.
GX - Grand AWD
LX - Luxury AWD

I think all the acronyms are given in the "The Lexus Story," a book that chronicles the history of Lexus in great detail. Available at your dealer or on Amazon.com. It makes for a great coffee table book, unfortunately I don't know where mine went.

Actually, I like Intelligent Sport and Grand Sport!

Along with Luxury Sedan and Executive Sedan.

X actually means wagon. Yes the evil dreaded station wagon. You will find wagon in the product description on their documentation.

I think this would be an interesting ad campaign. Lexus' current "why live in one dimension?" turned to What is IS?
