When I got my 2002 new from the dealership, I was happy as a clam. Poured my blood , sweat, and tears into it until fully paid off. Gosh the memories...
Well, anyways, yes, carfaxes can be fooled sometimes, especially when accidents or whatnot have not been reported. Body shops are required by law to report any accidents that come thru their doors for liability purposes.
In other words, that was all done backdoor style. Shady body shop, paid out of pocket to not report for claims, avoiding hit n run or police reports, etc.
If you wanna buy used, do as my fiancee did for his Honda Accord, go to youtube, search "ericthecarguy buying a used vehicle." Helps to educate on what to watch out for when it comes to used cars...
