Trading GS400 for IS300
hi gang,
for the last couple of months, i've been really itching for a car with a manual trans. one of my friends who frequents a honda forum [b20vtec] found this offer.
my car is a 1999. black. 135k. bilstein/h&r susp. weapon r intake. 01 tails.
as far as maintenance, i've done the tie rods, lower ball joints, and passenger side upper control arm. daizen steering rack and sway bar bushings. TB and WP were done at 75k and plugs were done at 90k.
according to the ad, this IS has a basically new engine with a buttload of upgrades. i'd be a fool to pass this up right??
thoughts?

this would be a straight trade. he didnt mention a CEL but he did say there was a problem with the front right ABS sensor.
we've been txting back and forth these past couple of days. but thanks for the reassurance kraven9.
i have no idea why the extensive powertrain and body work was done. thats the reason im not 100% on it.

^Ok cool. As mentioned he is meticulous. I knew the car when he first bought it when it was still MSM from day one. The engine never blew or anything, matter of fact he has a build thread on my.is. It wasn't hit either, he just wanted white and this was the end result. I think the only thing that came aftermarket on the car when he bought it was the greddy exhaust.

I gave up my GS400 a little over a year ago, drove around in a honda for about 6 months, and now have an 04 IS300 Sport Design.
I enjoy the ride, would definitely like it A LOT more if it was a manual, but i didnt have the patience to hold out for one to hit the market (i wish the 5spds weren't so rare). I wish i had my old GS4 all the time. I most def. wouldn't trade a GS for the IS above... I wouldn't be able to deal with the headliner and the engine bay being a diff. color than the body.

If the only reason you want the IS is because you want a 5-speed then you might as well get what you want. If other factors are important to you then you have to identify them and decide upon the merits of each.
I have a GS400 and I also really like driving a stick. The GS is a class of vehicle you won't find everyday. It has a great combination of class, comfort, sport, power and reliability. The IS is a very nice car. It is sporty, and realiable and it comes with a stick. If these two are the most important features for you then go for the IS. I am not sure I personally would go for the one you are looking at but in general I would consider an IS nevertheless. The one you are looking at has been customized and no longer retains factory details. For me this is important when it comes to lexus reliability.
I was actually looking at an'01 IS today for a second vehicle. Not surprisingly, my '98 GS4 with an extra 50K drove just as smooth as the IS but the GS4 still looks very fresh and elegent while the IS was looking a little more worn. I attribute this partly to my meticulous maintainance and partly due to the much higher class of materials used in the GS.
Bottom line, I would trade only if you think the IS is giving you something you really need to have. Otherwise the GS is a much better car.
