dang it, i could be wrong...i can't find a definitive answer for this...i know some ppl debated on it, but in the thread, it says they're the same, but someone else posts (in the same thread) that it's not the same...doh! flipside you could be correct as far as i know... my bad! serves me right for not linking threads as proof! but why would ppl differentiate btw SD lights if '04s have them? why are they called sportdesign lights then? and what are the '04 SD "titanium" finish lights like then? also, check out this thread...there is a clear differentiation betw '04 and SD...i'm confused now. sigh. i thought you could only purchase the SD headlamps as a complete set (hence the high retail cost)? that you couldn't order the housings by themselves?

all this trouble for some light housings! non-IS folks would think we're crazy for debating over this...heehee

it's not the lens, the reflector housing is a different color.

you can always cut your tails open and paint them! lol

LOL it's okay. I'll get the part numbers for all the lenses when I get a chance and give an update.

Cost cutting measures? Cheaper to manufacture one light assembly.

But anyways, here are the part numbers:

Gray Metallic: 81550-53070BO
Dark Smoke: 81550-53150BO

These part numbers are courtesy of Carson Toyota Parts.

so gray metallic being SD lights, and dark smoke being non-SD '04 lights? (thanks for doing the research, btw)

it's a lot of work, involves cutting with a dremel or plastic knife.. taking each housing apart takes 20-30 minutes, being extra careful. it is a different process from doing the headlights, which can be baked open...plus there is that extra risk of messing up and breaking something.

Let me get back to you on that. I confused myself with the colors and the part numbers for the specific application.

i thought most 04 has the darker reflectors now? at least i am pretty sure the silver and graphite has it. i remember it follows 03, and my 03 ggp has dark taillights.

and about taking the taillights apart and painting them, i don't suggest it. the taillights on the GS and the IS are pretty tightly done, it's not that easy to take apart. trust me, i was there. the headlight is another story

Heres more part numbers. I need to investigate more since this isn't a full listing and for which exact type.

2004 Sport Design:
81550-53070-BO - Right
81560-53070-BO - Left

2004 Regular:
81550-53100-BO - Right
81560-53100-BO- Left

2001-2003 All Models:
81550-53032-BO - Right
81560-53032-BO - Left

Okay

Just for clarification of this post; are these part numbers for the taillights or headlights because following the flow of conversation TCM### was talking about headlights. And the post originator was asking about tail lights...

btw: what is the part number for JDM Flat Black tail lights?

so these are taillights or headlights? just to clarify, i was talking about BOTH headlamps & taillights...the part numbers above don't seem 100% accurate, since "2001-2003 All Models" can't possibly all have the same part number for taillights OR headlights, since we know they varied from year to year. my understanding (which could be completely wrong) was always that:
(1) '01s were brighter chrome
(2) '02 (all) -'03 (non-SD only) were darker chrome
(3) '03 (SD) & '04 SDs are the same
(4) '04 (non-SD) are another dark chrome, but not as dark as '02s...

i realize this is being very nitpicky, so i apologize in advance!!!

WRONG
1. 01's all chrome
2. 02-03 light colored cars - chrome
02-03 darker cars - dark chrome
3. SD same color both years (with 04 option for "titanium")
4. 04 non-sd - dark gunmetallic
