My RX450H ABS actuator failed! Why won't Lexus fix it?

I just want to add that my 2013 Lexus RX450h just experienced the same episode (Check ABS, C1391 code) as yours. Mine has about 110,000 miles on it.

My local dealer performed diagnosis, found no fluid in the brake system and they got rid of the warning, but they still recommend to replace the actuator, accumulator assembly for over $4300. I haven't talked to Lexus about it.

Simply want to share this, I doubt this is a normal wear and tear case.

Looking back : My brake actuator always made that ABS chirping sound while the brake pedal was moderately pressed.
I even bought the issue to the west palm beach lexus dealership, but they claimed that this is how the hybrid works!

I contacted Lexus and they asked me to take it to Lexus dealer @ palm beach for diagnosis.

After Spending $400, i get a estimate of $3700 from the dealer.

Lexus is ready to pay $1000 towards the cost of replacing ABS actuator.

I think, there are lot more cases of ABS failing in Hybrids, and somehow they are able to hide it from nhtsa (national highway traffic safety administration).

I couldn't believe that a well engineered car like the Lexus would risk customer safety by using inferior parts!

mine makes the "sea lion" noise about once per month now. And, then, it mysteriously goes away. Is there some causation/correlation with the sound in this? Should I be worried?

It is the exact symptom of the failing (or failed) actuator I think.
When I research my brake issues, I run into a lot of information. Lexus actually sent a notice for fixing this problem back in 2017 for 2010-2016 models.
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...31781-9999.pdf
And then just days ago, Lexus sent the same notice for 2016 - 2018 models.

This is very unfortunate and concerning. First, they acknowledge the problem is there for the RX450h all these years. Secondly, they sent these notices while the car is still under "basic warranty", but it all depends on whether you notice the problem or whether you actively search for a solution.

I don't think the two are related. Lots of brake actuators across different models have been dealing with the noise issue, but very few of them actually fail and dump out their fluid. Mine has been barking on and off since just after the basic warranty ended sometime in 2013, that's over 6 yrs and about 70,000 more miles. I think the noise issue is related to trapped air that for some, a brake bleed fixes it, but I think the design sometimes makes it hard to completely bleed out all the trapped air.

Here is a blog post that described this rather prevalent issue on Toyota/Lexus

Check your mailbox. Lexus just sent me a Customer Support Program notice for this issue on 2010-2012 RX450H last week.

Default Me too

My 2010 RX450h has 168000 on it and Lexus won't fix the ABS actuator that went out last week. Honestly, I can't tell the difference but who's gonna buy it now??! I went to the corner mechanic and they'll do it for 2400 charging 1650 for the unit; looks like I can get the part from Lexus for 1450 though. I'm pretty handy but don't think I should mess with this one.

Any suggestions, please?

Previous post mentions a Customer support program .. call Lexus corporate to see if your vehicle qualifies. If not, I feel your pain, but keep in mind it is now 10yr old vehicle and your nearing 3 times the warranty milage. Cost is steep, salvage unit may be cheaper.

Dumb question but does this loud sound come when braking or even when pressing the brake pedal when the car is not moving?

Default ABS Actuator OEM lexus Part # 4405048320 (44050-48320) vs 44510-48080

I got the dreaded C1391 code Abnormal Leak in Accumulator. My mechanic replaced the accumulator and erased the codes but after a day of driving the warning lights all came back on and Freeze Frame Data showed C1391. He says it is time to replace the ABS Actuator module. The part# in my 2011 RX450h is 44510-48080. While searching for the part on ebay and other sites there is also another replacement part# that seems to be compatible - Part# 44050-48320.

Are Parts# 444510-48080 and 4050-48320 intercjhangable, are they the same part or is one an outdated part# and superceded?

My car isnt covered by the warranty unfortunately
