EV mode BUTTON is engaged when you are basically creeping in a parking lot. Battery has to be fully charged (8 bars, I believe) and speed has to be only several miles an hour. Then it will engage and propel the car.
It has little to none practicality and is basically a gimmick. A sales point. I quit fooling with it long ago.
Now, normal driving EV mode is when your vehicle automatically or purposefully stays in electric motor propulsion only during regular driving. So it's very slow accelerations from stop, rolling with momentum, rolling down the hill, reverse. All below cut off speeds for MG, which is 42 to 45 mph, depends on year and HSD generation.
No confusion here, hence us call it EV light vs EV mode/button. We are saying EV light does not always show the correct status.

EV mode button can be turned on even when battery is showing 4 bars, but yes it's pretty much a gimmick.

I am far from " clear confusion".

I have not used the EV mode in either of my 450 units. Gimmick for sure.

maybe good for sneaking into the garage on a late date?

From what I've also read it's mostly a marketing gimmick. The computer will turn it off if/when you are asking for too much power from the hybrid battery or for more than just a few minutes.

A hybrid is NOT an electric vehicle. It is a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine, but one where the engine is aided by an auxiliary electric infrastructure under those temporary conditions where the engine would be running inefficiently (high manifold vacuum primarily).

I personally think it's a brilliant design.

The internet would disagree with you. A hybrid is an electric vehicle:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_electric_vehicle
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_vehicle

The RX450h can be propelled by purely electric only, albeit under limited circumstances and distances.

What you may be trying to state is that it is not a fully electric vehicle, which then would be a true statement.

It is why they call it an hybrid.

I am engaging EV mode every day for the last 1.5 miles of my drive home, which is through development roads with a speed limit of 25 MPH, and includes a fairly steep hill. For me, EV mode has been more useful than I expected. I had assumed that it would be rather useless, but taking advantage of the battery alone in EV mode for the end of each trip home has worked surprisingly well and improved my overall fuel economy. It is of no use on highways and secondary roads, but I'd suggest that people give it a try in low-speed neighborhoods.
