we should be asking how many ECU's does this car have. 6000 is WAY to many, but the computers it does have may deal with 6000 different functions...

Recent Top Gear episode showed that the new Bentley Continental GT had 28 ECU's in it as an idea.

"Computers" is loosely defined. A module will often be called a computer, but isn't really. For example, there are hundreds of modules that control everything from AFS, suspension, sealtbelt tensioners etc. I would be VERY surprised if there were 6000 computers in these cars (even factoring modules), otherwise our cars would weigh 10 tons each! LOL

Exactly, there are anywhere from 20 to 30ish ECUs in the LS from what I can remember from techstream, significantly more than I remember my 09 GS. It differs obviously per car based on the options you have. There is one for the windows, one for the headlights, one for abs, one for side mirrors and so on. Some things actually fall under something called a body control module, which there are multiple of which can cover a few things that relate, and then there are things like pre collision system ecu which you would only have if you have PCS.

Default found this in the Lexus LS 600 Workshop manual

MULTIPLEX COMMUNICATION
J
DESCRIPTION
D
The multiplex communication system of the new LS600hL/600h uses the 4 communication protocols described below in order to achieve a streamlined wiring harness configuration.
- CAN (Controller Area Network): A protocol is used for real-time control applications at high-speed communication rates. The CAN consists of 7 busses and is used for communication among 45 ECUs for power train, chassis and body electrical systems.
- LIN (Local Interconnect Network): A protocol is used for local area networking, of which the system has a respective bus for each body electrical system.
- AVC-LAN (Audio Visual Communication - Local Area Network): Used for communication only
between the audio-visual systems.
D
Due to the introduction of the CAN system for the power train, chassis and body electrical systems, the BEAN (Body Electronics Area Network) the is used for the body electrical system on previous LS430 is not used on new LS600hL/600h.
D
A customized body electronics system is used, enabling the control functions of the ECUs to be set using an intelligent tester.
