Default Tapping sound on startup ?

I search around and people seem to say its normal but they did not have any audio samples. Can you guys let me know if this sounds normal. Its only on startup.. once warm it goes away..

Hard to tell from the video because of the wind noise, but the little bit we hear between 8 and 11 seconds sounds normal when cold (recall this from my prior RXh and similarly sounding with my current RX).

EDIT: I hear a rattle in the first two-three seconds of the video. Is that it? That would not be normal and if it goes away when the engine warms up, it might be a cylinder/valve or lubrication issue. What's the mileage on your RX and has it been maintained as per schedule?

I agree, the noise sounds pretty normal on a cold start. The fact it goes away after warming up is nothing to worry about.

Default Not normal

I can't really hear it in the clip, but from your description it sounds like a hydraulic valve adjuster bleeding down oil while the engine is off (if these engines have those things), then it pumps up after a short while of engine operation. They're not supposed to do that, and eventually it will damage the surfaces that are smacking together making the tapping noise.
Good luck getting a warranty service or service department to fix it, though. They'll say just live with it or "it's normal."

Not my words but this might be what's going on:

What you are hearing is the cam phasers rattling back and forth until they refill with oil. Toyota addressed this issue with the locking pins for the newer dual VVT-i motors. They hold the phasers in a fixed position until there is enough oil pressure to release the pins. When the engine is running those empty areas between the lobes are full of oil. The question is why are they not holding oil like they used to? Unless they find a way to retrofit the auto locking phasers into the single VVT-i motors, the issue will just return IMO. Good luck, and keep us posted!
