I believe this smaller oil drain "valve" is there for users who don't feel the need to change their oil filter at every oil change. I still take the whole thing apart, but there is no need to.

I did the oil change on my LS this weekend, and I must say that this DIY was very helpful.
One thing I would like to add though, is to get the oil filter wrench that has the 6 slots (notches) that engages the tabs(ears) of the oil filter cap. (see pics attached pics)
I got the one that was recommended earlier in this thread, however, the oil filter would not budge, and it felt like I was going to damage the oil filter housing. I went and got the wrench with slots and then I was able to remove the oil filter cap with little effort.
Again great DIY

I see this oil filter on ebay. Same part number but ls460 is not listed as compatible. I think it's a mistake. As long as the part # is correct, i should get it?

One thing I might add... laziness rises to the occasion.
However, I could easily tell the drain nut had never been removed. The oil in that area had gelled, and the nut was very had to break loose... So many things go on in places we don't have access to - and even if we did, we certainly couldn't stand next to the mechanic the whole time.
To me anyway, it's a constant reminder that there is no substitute for DIY.
