The best I got while using on regular 87 gas is 28.8mpg and that was a drive to Las Vegas and back to L.A. I usually get around 26-27mpg with the AC off, while I get 25mpg if the AC is on. I managed to drive about 440 Miles on one tank, which I thought was not bad, since I drove about 550 Miles on one tank on my Prius.

I have an update on my mileage.
For the last two tanks in which I used 93 octane, I have averaged 31.0 mpg!! This is about 60/40 highway/city driving and using the AC all the time. I have previously posted that I noticed no difference between premium and mid-grade gas, but now I have seen a big gain in mpg. I was getting about 28.5 on midgrade. I don't know why, perhaps it is because the car needed to break in more. I now have 8,000 miles on my '07 400h.
I decided to switch to premium since the prices have come down lately.
I'm very, very happy about the mileage!!!!

I have been getting 27 to 28 MPG this tank. This is my third tank the first tank was 24 reason we sat with it running learning the vehicle at the dealer second was 26.3 third has been between 27.3 and 28.3 MPG. I am thinking of keeping records soon on my gas milage something I never did on my Prius.

OK I've got my new 2007 RX 400h.
With the first tank filled by dealer I had an average of 28 MPG for the first 380 miles, until I refilled the tank. (it wasn't empty)
I drove on cruise control with a speed of...58MPH most of the time.
After refueling, with Premium gasoline, I drove 450 miles (so far) first 250 with the cruise control on 65MPH the rest set on 58MPH and the display shows an average of 28.7 MPG.
Now, I don't know what kind of gasoline the dealer used, I thought it was Regular, but after this 28.7 (vs. 28) I think it was Premium too.
I'll keep it under observation...so far I have only 830 miles with the car, to early to place my vote to the poll.

You're right you don't have to be happy with 26. If I were you, I'd trade it for a Toyota Yaris (or some other Toad Mobile) that is EPA rated at 29/35. If you actually get those numbers you'll be really happy, if not then you'll be on the Yaris forum complaining about it. Either way the 400h forum will benefit from your departure and rest of us will be happier.
I get an overall 26 in a car that should be getting 17. It is smoother than a Yaris, cooler than a Yaris, faster than a Yaris (and a Porche Cayene) yet gets about the same mileage as a YARIS!!
Get over it.

So I want to make sure I understand your position here... It's your opinion that someone needs to depart this forum because you think their complaining about gas milege is trivial and rediculous?
May I suggest that you take a look at the US Constitution. Specifically the first amendment:

What's your problem, you didn't sleep good last night? ...you know, it works both ways, if you don't like someone's view point, you're free to ignore it or to...depart, for the benefit and happiness of the rest of us

Just did a 790 Mile roundtrip between Northern and Southern California (San Jose to Anaheim). Vehicle was weighed down with 4 adults and luggage. Spent much time on HWY's I-5 and 152 where the speed limit is 70 MPH. My AWD 06 400h returned an average of 25.2 MPG for the entire trip. This Also with the AC on for pretty much the entire trip. I am quite pleased with this number especially in light that several of the gas stations charged $3.45 for regular unleaded, and $3.65 for Premium 91 octane.

25.2 Thats not too bad. Though I always compare these numbers against my mom's RX300, which was only good for 20, maybe 21 hwy. I guess that comparisson isnt entirely fair seeing as how the 3.5L engine is more efficient.

My 2007 RX 400h has now 2500 miles.
The last 1400 miles was a round trip LA to Oregon.
First half was during the night, with the A/C OFF, using Premium gas at a constant speed (on cruise control) of 68MPH
I got an average of 28 MPG
On my way back it was during the day with the A/C ON and using REGULAR gas at a constant speed of 68MPH (also on cruise control)
I got an average of 26 MPG
Considering the usage of the A/C most of the time on my way back I don't see any difference between Premium and Regular gas
The only conclusion I came with is: Is not true that the 400h has a better mileage in city than on freeway.

Bravo!!! My sentiments exactly. I hope somebody at Toyota Motor Corp / Lexus USA Dealers are reading this. I too find no difference, and in fact the true is opposite in my analysis. I get BETTER gas mileage using Regular Unleaded vs Super Unleaded.
If your driving to maximise mileage, your never asking the fuel to be stretched to its limits. Under heavy load or for maximum performance, Super Unleaded fuel will perform more efficiently in extracting every last horsepower under higher temperatures, and cylinder pressures.

I now have 12,000 miles on my '07 400h and am getting terrific gas mileage. I am averaging 29 mpg. Over the last few months the best I've done on a single tank is 30.5 and the worst is 28.8.
Unlike some of the other posts here, I have seen a very notable difference between regular and premium gas - so much so that I now only use premium. However, note that when I first bought the car, I did not notice any difference between grades over about the first 5-6,000 miles.
Also, I definately get better gas mileage in city versus highway driving. The optimal driving conditions are rolling country roads with speed limits between 40-50 mph. On these roads I can easily get 33-35 mpg.
Extended highway driving will drop me down in the 28ish mpg range (unless I drive in the right lane and do the speed limit! ).
So I guess the oft quoted statement "Your mileage may vary" applies here.
