I recently came across comma.ai and I'm impressed by what it has been able to achieve in short time - Tesla like self driving for fraction of cost!
There're are many videos on YouTube if you're interested.

I'm curious if anyone has tried that on HS? If you have, or have considered it, can you please share your experience or at least your thoughts?

Seems limited by the sensors in the car. The HS doesn't have any side-looking cameras, so it can't see what's driving next to you. Plus it doesn't have nearly the processing power to process all the data in real time. You need more than software to create a self-driving car. It will never safely change lanes (or highways) by itself like a Tesla. But it may provide a more advanced traffic-aware cruise control + lane keep assist.

@Magellan55 You're right - I shouldn't have said self driving like Tesla. That'd certainly require a whole bunch of sensors and cameras. My newest car is an Audi Q7 which has what Audi calls "Driver Assistance" - Level 2 to be strictly speaking. It actively steers the car and with active cruise control can bring the car to a full stop and resume from full stop. Here in this part of the country, where 6-8 hours of drive is "not bad" ;), this comes in very handy. There's a noticeable less stress for the driver - grab a sandwich from drive-thru and right back on highway - you can be eating your sandwich comfortably while driving :D
This is what comma.ai does with Openpilot and I wanted to see if it there was any possibility to using it on my old HS.

@rajeev6 Hi. Did you ever end up installing Comma/ai / Open Pilot in a Lexus? I am looking at various models with LSS 2.0 and seeking to purchase something with Open Pilot in mind. I've spent some time on their Discord channel, but am also interested to see what folks think on here.

No - couldn't figure out how as my HS (still have the car) doesn't have neither Adaptive Cruise nor Lane Keep.
I ended up buying a 2017 IS300 (with Adaptive Cruise and Lane Keep) for my daughter and it worked flawlessly. Drove from TX to NY - more than 2000 miles with at least 1500 miles driven by Comma/OpenPilot.

Can open pilot on the 2017 IS come to a complete stop and proceed without any driver input?

For your question, no - it can't. Its limited by car's in-built capability. The car cancels the cruise control below, I believe, 28 mph.
Comma discusses all functionalities on Discord - you can find a lot more information there - like this forum, members there as well are very helpful.

For everyone who stumbles on this thread, I found that my HS doesn't have electric steering. It would if it came with adaptive cruise and lane keep assist (LKAS).
As such, Comma Openpilot won't work.

Actually the HS does have electric power steering. It is just not of the type that can be accessed and controlled by modern smart safety features like LKAS and active cruise. Being that the HS was released as a 2010 model, it was designed a few years before then and thus lacks any modern safety features that you get on a new 2010 model.

Thanks for the info. I also thought that it should have electric power steering to ensure proper steering control when the car was running on battery but then came across parts listing on various sites where the name of the part implied it to not be an electric power steering.
I know that few HS, even in 2010, came with LKAS. Given that, I'd think that the electric steering should have a way to to receive appropriate commands from the LKAS system to keep the car in lane. I'll need to ask around in Comma Openpilot forums.

Good Luck. The HS is really an orphan car since they only imported them for 3 model years. They continue to be built for the Japanese and European markets, so maybe the newer models have those modern safety upgrades.
