Default New GX 470 owner

Just bought a 2003 GX470 with 108K on the clock. So far, I'm loving the vehicle.

I've also got a 1994 Toyota pickup (caged and long-travel), an expedition-built 1997 4Runner. I'm obviously a big fan of Toyota truck/SUV platforms. I don't plan to do anything silly with the GX (at least for now).

Car has a few problems that should be handled next week:

1) Ride height adjustment doesn't work. Just sits at "N" and doesn't respond to the button on the console. Rear end hiss and settle when we park, so I do believe the bags are working. Either console switch or more likely the height sensor (I'm guessing).

2) Blown Mark Levinson mids in front doors.

3) Tiny amount of grease on right front CV boot.

All of these seem like common problems with these trucks. No big deal, as long as we can get the issues resolved. I've also got parts coming to do the timing belt, filters, and water pump -- seems well-cared for, but the 90k maintenance wasn't done. Anyway, happy to join the forum, and hope to add something to the conversation.

Welcome aboard!

Just a quick thing on the suspension. Were you moving when you tried the height adjustment buttons? Or were you stationary? They won't work if you are driving, unless you are going very slow. The hissing sound when you shut the truck off and get out is normal, as it in compensating for you getting out of the truck.

The speakers in the front, i imagine you could just throw a set of nice aftermarket ones in there without any problems.

If you're going to change the torn CV boot, be prepared to change the other one not long after.

(ask me how I know this ... )

No need to ask. Good friend of mine is a Lexus mechanic, and he told me where to look for trouble. Says he sees a lot of 470s with leaky CV boots. Bought the car from CarMax, so all the maint is being done under the first 30 days warranty.

Yoshiman also asked if I tried height adjust while stationary or while moving. Tried both. No dice. Sounds like a sensor or the switch. Will learn more next week.

The Mark Levinson speakers are 8ohm 6x9 attached to a crossover and amp that's specifically built for that setup. I don't think it would be wise to swap just the blown speakers for aftermarkets. So, they are going to be repaired (foam and glue method) or replaced by Carmax. If I ever do aftermarket, I think I'll need to replace all of the speakers and the amp to make it sound right.

Love that that color. I have the same one in an 06. Get the 90k service done asap. Inspect your belts! Interference engines are no joke if the belt snaps. If the timing belt fails or even skips a beat the piston may throw itself into a valve. Congrats on the new ride

Thanks for the input and encouragement.

I purchased parts to do the 90k++ maintenance (filters, gaskets, spark plugs, timing belt, and water pump). Should be done in two weeks. In the meantime, she goes in to carmax for speaker and ride height adjustment repairs on Wednesday. Getting a new nav DVD (I'm on 2.1) this week as well.

Only thing left should be new tires and a bluetooth/Aux update.
