I built a very simple bed platform for the back of my GX550 Overtrail. My goal was to build a solid single-wide bed that I can easily move in and out of my vehicle, as required. I will use it this week on my maiden voyage to Joshua Tree National Park.
The platform lays over the top of the folded down double wide back seat, and is completely level all the way to the back door. Overall it's about 70 inches long x 26" wide. I built the platform from two sheets of 3/8" plywood that were glued together. I used 2x3's as I-beam like stiffeners under the length of the platform to ensure rigidity and no flexing. Upon completion, the entire platform was covered with black felt. I'm very happy with the results. I have enough room under the bed to store my container of kitchen supplies and my clothes. I use a 2 1/2" piece of foam on top of the platform with sheets, a wool blanket and a pillow for sleeping.
Here are a few pictures of the final product, and during the build cycle. And good news - it's very lightweight and easy to move in and out of the truck.
