My GX460 suffered greatly prior to my ownership. It suffered at the unskilled hands of quick lube technicians who lost a few bits and broke a few others. The two bolts for the front skid, one is snapped off flush and the other is halfway stripped out. I see that the mount piece is available for ordering and it looks like it just bolts in place. If that is the case, that would work perfect for me because it includes the threaded hole where the bolts hold the front of the skid plate on.

I was looking at they don't seem to be welded at all and it seems like Lexus and Toyota use if for several different applications. I'm tempted to order one and see what happens.

Looks like the same part number is used for both sides and this part is used on the 4Runner also. Found one on eBay for a reasonable price so I made an offer. I'll document the replacement here because I'm sure I'm not the only one with a stripped out or broken bolt due to negligence.

Also worth noting, the plastic panel in front of the skid plate... ugh, mine has 5 bolts, all of which are different. Going to order those along with new rear shocks and bushings from PartsSouq here in a few pay checks.

Just say no to quick lube places.

 

Offer accepted so hopefully it will show up in a few days. Thankfully I got an extra skid plate bolt from Bell Lexus awhile back. I did try to drill out the old broken bolt and use an extractor, but it is really jammed up in there.

Will report back when it shows up.

 

Just a thought, but I would recommend putting some anti-seize on the threads/bolts to the skid plates to avoid future issues. The scenario is fairly common among the Toyota family of vehicles with skid plates.

 

Mount arrived today. It was sold as used but it looks like new and I had to punch through the labels to try the skid plate bolt holes. I'll try and get it mounted up on Tuesday and if it works, then I'll order one for more the other side.

I wonder, did you encounter other seized/problem bolts when replacing mounts. That's my only concern with this approach. More sheared bolts.....

I had planned to drill and tap out old sheared frontmost skid plate bolt, but wonder if that will work given that I've got quite a bit of rust/corrosion there. So I'm also concerned the bracket bolts are also seized.

I soaked whole underside with Fluid Film (by the gallon) when I first got vehicle to at least slow corrosion. But it had a gained a foothold in that area particularly because, again, hacker prior owner didn't wash underside in PA winter salt season I suspect.

I was aware of problem when buying, but price was right, and otherwise vehicle was pretty clean. So I took leap and have otherwise been VERY impressed with vehicle.

In fact, I'm such a Lexus/Toyota truck fan as a result of this GX460, my 2017 F150 that's spent a just ridiculous amount of time in shop WILL be replaced by a 2022+ Tundra.

 

So the mount I got didn't work. I got the part number from PartsSouq and it is just too small. I'm not sure what happened. Looking on their site now, it looks like I found the right one.

I ordered the new one from Bell Lexus for $99 after shipping. I don't know how the wrong part number came up... it was all from PartsSouq so I'm not sure what happened. I was researching on their site, found that part number and searched on eBay and ended up with the one I got. Oh well, it wasn't expensive. The factory parts comes off easily, three 14mm bolts and that's it. So I'll try again in a few days. It should be noted that it is the same part of either side, left or right.

From google search 51403-60020 is for 4runner and 51403-60030 is the right one.

 

Right part showed up from Bell Lexus and was a perfect match. Put it on the driver's side since that one was snapped off flush. As you can see on the skid plate picture, the person who broke it used some sort of tacky tar-like substance to help hold it in place. Was a real treat to remove that.

Anyways, all good now and a piece of cake to install. Going to order one more since the front bolt on the passenger side is stripped out.

 

Ordered a second mount for the passenger side. This time, I ordered from Partsouq, which had the mount for $47. After shipping and two new mount bolts (PN 9011908A33) the total was $80. First time ordering from Partsouq so we will see how it goes. I also ordered 5 new bolts for the plastic panel that mounts in front of the skid plate as all mine were different and none of them appeared to be OEM.

 

Are you just trying to fix the stripped skid plate nuts? You can drill and tap them to a larger 10mm or use a Rivet Nut which are really cool.

 

Parts Needed:
1. Drill with fully charged battery
2. High Speed Drill Bits (one made for steel, not regular drill bit used for wood and home stuff). Home Depot Tap and Drill bit set from Dewault (DWA 1422)- Drill and 8 mm x 1.25 NC Tap Set
3. Tap socket - I used IRWIN Tap Socket Set, Adjustable, 2-Piece (3095001) - You would only use the one that takes the 1/4" to 1/2" Taps.
4. Tap 8mm x 1.25 (suggested: Irwin Tools 8334 8mm x 1.25 Metric Tap, much better then dewault 8 mm tap)
5. Cutting oil/Liquid Wrench/WD-40

Procedure:
DO NOT DO THIS WITHOUT SAFETY GLASSES- Metal Shavings will be everywhere and they will be hot.
1. Remove Skid Plate
2. Clean the area around the broken bolt and spray some WD-40 or Liquid Wrench.
3. Hit a center punch using a smaller drill bit.
4. Using a smaller drill bit from your high speed bit set, drill a smaller hole over the stuck bolt. You would have to back out the bit and spray cutting oil to keep things cool.
5. After the hole is all the way through using your smalled bit, use the correct size bit for the final hole (drill bit that came with drill and tap set from Dewault. You can also google the bit size you need for 8mm hole). Again you will have to spray the WD or Liquid Wrench to keep things cool and have to back out serval times.
6. Use the 8 mm tap and slowly start screwing it up the hole, back out a little bit and then go in again, spray cutting oil etc. Repeat until the hole is fully threaded.
7. Reinstall the skid plate and make sure to use the anti seize.









This was the very first time I used a tap and drill set , I was scared but there is nothing to loose.

My skid plate looks like it was abused prior to my ownership, it has rust dents and the metal screen is only partly attached. Besides pure looks, is there any reason I should replace the skid plate or at least fabricate a new metal screen?
