Finally sat in a GX460 and GX470
I was fortunate enough to sit in both a 2008 GX470 and a 2012 GX460 that were next to each other at my local Lexus dealership. After researching both for the last month and a half, and my experience sitting in both cars, I came to some unexpected conclusions.
The interior quality in the GX460 seemed inferior to the GX470. The seats were more comfortable in the GX470 both front and back, there were no gaps in the dash and center console. It was pretty much a smaller LX470.
After sitting in the GX460, it just felt a little bit 4Runner-ish, but nicer. I'm not knocking on it since my intended purpose is to go off road these vehicles, but for it being a Lexus, it seems a little inferior to past products. I'm not sure if the quality change was to fixed past issues (cracked dashes on the GX470). My wife even felt the GX470 was more comfortable and nicer inside.
Now we both agreed that the GX460 looked nicer from the outside. We didn't test drive either vehicle, so this is just based on sitting in the vehicle and examining the interior.
I gathered numbers on the GX470:
Curb Weight: 4871 lbs.
Leg Room F/R: 41.8"
Head Room F/R: 40.2"
Seating Capacity (Std.): 5/8
Cargo Capacity for Cars: 78 cu. ft.
and the GX460:
Curb Weight: 5340 lbs.
Leg Room F/R: 41.7"
Head Room F/R: 38.0"
Seating Capacity (Std.): 7/7
Cargo Capacity for Cars: 64.7 cu ft (although some sites say 92?)
Which model technically has more cargo room? I know the raised floor robs some room on the GX460, but the seats in the GX470 can be removed which compensates for room which can be inconvenient.
Also, does the 4.6L engine use a timing belt or timing chain? We are looking to test drive both vehicles within the next few days if they are still on the lot.

I had a 2008 GX and now a 2012 GX. Both have its pluses and minuses but as it relates to the seats, to me the GX460 seats are more comfortable by far. I notice this mostly when taking long road trips.
However, while they are more comfortable I feel that they are not made as well as the GX470 seats were. They feel lighter and not as durable and one of the things that bugs me is that on the lower outside portion of the seat where you sit, after a while, depending on how you get out, there is some foam or something under the leather that folds and makes that section lumpy (kind of hard to explain). I have seen this on other used GX460s as well but I believe it is the way you enter and exit the truck and I can't seem to get my wife to do it right.
As for the rest of the interior, I feel the GX460 is nicer. The GX470 interior seems a little dated IMO.

Also, as far as the ride; there is a huge difference! Again, if you are using the vehicle mostly for off-roading the 470 is the better choice. You have to remember all 460s have KDSS and I'm not sure how well it will play with any off-road mods. Then again, if you can find a 460 with crawl control you may want to consider it. I can tell you crawl control is worth its weight in GOLD!

Thanks guys!
I like the fact that all 2010's and up have crawl control as a standard feature. I'll have to check the FJ and 4Runner forums to see what mods work on the models that have it. I'm torn between both the GX460 and GX470, but I'm seeing that they are unique in their own ways. Decisions, decisions lol

It is different. The GX460, like the older GX470, comes standard with downhill assist. Crawl control is described as follows:
"In addition to KDSS, the GX 460 offers optional Crawl Control, a technology that helps make driving off-road easier. The Crawl Control feature automatically modulates the throttle and brake, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering. Crawl Control is also useful to help navigate the vehicle through sand, mud or snow."

Crawl control can be used up or down hill and in reverse. It can be stopped and re-started without disengaging the system. The speed can be adjusted from 1 mph up to 5 mph on the fly.
BTW - The 460 can also be equipped with the wide-view monitoring system, which really helps when you do not have a spotter. The 460's wheel direction display also comes in handy!

Oops! I got KDSS confused with crawl control. I do have a 2007 FJ, and know they have a huge aftermarket following. But I need a V8 to haul the family and their stuff. I need to do research on crawl control.

I just bought my 3rd gx470 after test driving gx 460s each of the last 3 years
the 460 is no where near as comfortable for my girth 6ft 1 215 pds
my right leg leans against the bowed out counsel and the car rides sluggish
I think I am sitting higher up with awkward perceptions
in my opinion they went dramatically backwards and the unit sales keep going down

2014/2015 4runner
Trail Edition (TE) : KDSS and optional Crawl Control , rear Diff
TEp (premium) : adds heated seats
Limited Edition (LE) : Xreas and FT 4wd and center diff. cannot get crawl control
(KDSS and XREAS are mutually exclusive, 3rd row is optional for SR5 and LE, 3rd not possible with TE)
GX460 : marriage of the LE features with the TE features:
KDSS,
optional crawl control,
FT 4wd,
v8,
swing out barn door (4runner has lift up rear door),
standard 3rd row,
2nd row is heated (depends on model/options) (4runner doesn't have this option period),
cargo space with all seats in place - 11.6 (max is 64.7) / 4runner seats in place 47.2 (no 3rd row) --max 89.7
mpg 15 vs 17 on 4runner
about 10-15k more than a 4runner (LE)

Have owned a 2006 GX470 with KDSS and now a 2014 GX460 and without a doubt the 2014 is way more comfortable - not even close. I'm tall so the 470 could not get the seat back far enough and long drives killed me whereas the 460 has great seating. And the 460 is no way sluggish...just step on the skinny pedal.
Honestly though - both trucks are great and well built. I just prefer driving the '14.
I also have a '10 T4R fully modified - everything from front bumper to rear bumper - and the only thing it is missing is the V8 from the 460.

I thought the GX was sluggish too at first but as been discussed a few times once you learn where the power band is and how to control it, it's quite peppy. I'd love to have more power but overall it does well I feel.
