Not gonna lie...this is the worst part of the GX IMO. But the flip up window kinda makes it tolerable.

I had a 14 FJ and traded a 17 4Runner for the GX and my wife had the swing door on her older Rav4, The FJ and Rav4 had swing doors probably because of the weight of the spare tire. The lift gate on the 4 Runner was a little short for me being 6-4, I don't mind the swing door, it's one less thing to hit my head on. Although it would be nice to have a sliding rear window instead of a pop out.

The swinging door is for the spare tire, just like the Jeep Wrangler has a swinging door.

BTW, the Wrangler swings the same direction. Which at first seems odd since it opens opposite of the curb, but when you open it, you see that the spare tire will be on the curb side, which is safer to mess with in case you get a flat while traveling.

do you mean the swinging door should be for a spare tire? i dont understand if you mean on the GX; the GX spare doesnt have much to do with the door that im aware of.

I like the swinging door. more ergonomic, dont have to lift arms above shoulders. ok, so thats not really a big deal for me.

my old 4runner had the worst: a swing out spare tire that had to be moved in order to open the flip down tailgate.

Yes, the GX isn't just made for the US, its sold world wide as a more utilitarian truck with a spare tire on the rear door. I'm sorry if you weren't aware of that.

I thought I read there are more internal structural supports on models that have the tire on door. I think they only recently...last year or so started to offer a Prado trim setup like ours without rear tire on door in Australia. The flip up window being considered a new option there.

No need for sorrow, I was aware of that.

I understood the words in the post. I did not realize you were referring to international versions since this wasn't mentioned.
I asked in order to get clarity in case there was something I wasn't aware of.

I like the barn door as I don't hit my head on it. I would have to put a 4"-5" lift on it otherwise.

My older brother had a stroke last year and is still recovering. I just got back from a short 3 day weekend with my older sister and brother at my cabin. He did great but my sister had to help out a lot too.

I told my older sis I was proud she knew how the back door of the GX 460 worked.... she knew right away without confusion. Perhaps she had seen her son (my nephew's door)... he has a '06 GX 470

Besides the swing door of GX, best wishes and speedy recovery to you brother!
