Default Mild ‘thump’ when pulling out

Hi there. Not an owner yet, but test drove a 2018 w/ 23k miles today that I am very interested in owning. I noticed twice on the test drive when just starting to pull out (may have both been while turning right) there was a thump or thud or even a feeling just like I ran over a fist sized rock (without the truck shifting). But I know I didn’t run over anything. If that makes sense. It’s being offered by an Acura dealer. Rest of the driving experience is super nice.

is there something I should be concerned about?

BTW, great looking forum y’all have here!

thanks,
Bill

Sounds like a front strut or the KDSS. Might be a simple sway bar bushing. I wouldn't ignore it..... even if it has low miles. Take it over some speed bumps.

When you said "thump", this reminds me of the thump/clunk issue that occurred on my 04 GX470, there was a service bulletin for it for this 1st gen model years back, and I got it fixed. This was a well known issue on the forum. I dont know what is causing your issue but good to have it check out.

My guess is that the slip yoke simply needs greased. I'm on GX #3...very common, and not any big deal. These things are sold in over 100 countries as a "Toyota Land Cruiser Prado" and are bulletproof. If it's got a clean car fax and you take it to a trusted body guy to make sure that it wasn't dinged and not reported, jump on it. The GX has a cult following for good reason.

Agree ... Slip Yoke ... very common ... lubricate and wait to draw any further conclusion. Even with proper lubrication ... on steep down hill braking where the weight of the vehicle is significantly shifted forward ... a thump is common on subsequent acceleration. GX470 / GX460 / 4-Runner / FJ Cruiser ... all do the same.

Thanks so much y’all! I bought it. Had the Lexus dealership check it out. Technician mentioned something about one of the ‘height control sensors’ not being properly in its home. That seemed to correct the majority of it. I’ve felt what I thought was the same issue just a couple of times since, but only barely. The Acura dealer where I purchased the GX even reimbursed me for the diagnostic charge that Lexus charged me. Happy new owner here. No regrats! .

looking forward to hanging out with y’all

Height Control Sensor is only specific to the rear-air-bags leveling out the rear-end based on payload. Yes ... will change the driveshaft angle ever so slightly ... but you are back to the Slip Yoke (Stiction) as stated in earlier posts. Lubricate your Slip Yoke ...

I've noticed the same thump on mine when the weather turned cold here in Chicago. Mine has 10k miles, but I've lubed the driveshaft (all 6 fittings) twice already. I just squeeze 2 or 3 times at each fitting. I'm afraid to put in too much grease in the yoke fittings to where it may prevent the driveshaft from sliding inward. How many pumps in the yoke fittings? Or is it a trial, where put in a couple pumps then drive it a while and see if the thump goes away...then repeat?

See the thread on "Chassis Lubrication/Grease of Propeller Shaft...". My post, #152 details the TSB on my '21. Dealer said not to lube, as there is a TSB for a revised driveshaft. Being that yours is a '22, it may be eligible for the driveshaft TSB. There wasn't any discernable visual appearance, but it indeed got rid of the thump.

Hey Bill, mind telling me what you got it for? I’m looking for a similar year/mileage GX. Also what city/state as the market is changing constantly around the country.

Default Is this the bulletin you're referring to?

My '21 with 38K just started doing this as the weather turned. Not anything loose moving when accelerating/decelerating, but the apparently famous "bump" that can be felt when accelerating or decelerating from/to a stop.
