After 500 miles on the highway, I can honestly say that my 12 year old GX470 was better in almost every category:
Fuel Mileage: The GX460 averaged 17 MPG at 77mph average for this trip. Horrendous considering my GX470 averaged 19 MPG for the same road trip I've taken many times.
Noise: Wind noise in the GX460 is disappointing. Not sure if it sub-par noise insulating material or aerodynamic related. I measured the noise level at 7-8 decibels higher than my GX470.
Transmission: With the cruise set at 77MPH, the transmission regularly down-shifted on even the slightest upgrade, back and forth to the point where i had to put it in manual 6th gear to stop the annoyance. The NEVER happened with the GX470. If the 4.6L engine has more HP that the 4.7, it certainly doesn't feel like it to me.
Navigation/Enform/Phone Connect: Not much improved on this system since 2007; navigation is still frustrating to use and had me driving in circles in Chicago. I turned it off and reverted to Waze on my phone. Now, Ii don't get an audible ring tone when a call comes in. Likely a setting but you would think that the default would be to ring when a call comes in. I'll have to mess around with that.
Suspension Noise over Bumps: There is a squeak/creak/rattle in the front when going over bumps/speed humps; with only 20K miles on the car, it certainly can't be a bad ball joint but it sure sounds like it. The suspension is wound so tight and stiff, perhaps it's knocked something loose? I suspected the skid plate was loose and rattling but no....it wasn't that.

I do have to take into the dealership to troubleshoot my remote start (yes...that's not working either as apparently the database and the car need to "handshake" whatever that means) and I will ask the service tech about the issues I'm having.

Guys, all i can say is that I am pretty disappointed. My wife is pissed and says she'll not ride in the car on long trips anymore and wants me to get my old GX470 back. Well, that car is long gone now, so not really any options for us other than just to get used to it.

Has anyone had any similar experiences in transitioning from the 470 to the 460 or is it just me? I don't thing the car is a lemon; I think it's just designed the way it is. Certainly not as luxurious and comfortable as the 470 in my opinion. If i could go back and do it all over again, I would have kept my GX470 and invested $5-7K to upgrade it. Lesson learned I guess.
wow I never knew the older version was even better than current ones. very interesting and good luck bro

stuhrw: Did you ever test drive a Luxury model with AVS/RAHC?

This would be a similar suspension setup to the GX 470 aside from the KDSS on 460 which was a rare GX 470 option.

I notice you have aftermarket bars on top as well. Have you removed them to see how much difference in noise you notice? I have heard they cause more noise than the stock bars.

Pedal Commander can help address your throttle mapping concerns. I find mine smoother in Cruise with ECO set but if you dial it up it will feel far more aggressive. While it may not feel like it.. repeated timed tests by multiple magazines show the 460 at least a second faster.

Default Reasons to love the 460, PS I have some theories on the brakes.

I came from a V8 4Runner basically same vehicle as a 470. I thought long and hard about getting a 470 or a 460 for my new project. There are lots of reasons to love the 460, the Addition of KDSS, the loss of a timing belt, ability to add MTS and Crawl Control for ~500 dollars. More power and torque, 6spd gearbox with a lower 1st gear. Cooled Seats( I live in the south and leather sucks without it) larger alternator, and all the reliability of the older 470 with fewer miles, I chose to get one without Air or AVS because I knew I’d be lifting the truck. I have asked for comfort valving on my Dobinsons kit to soften up the ride a bit. As for the brakes, I think there are a combination of factors, lower 1st gear(loads up at stop), Pads seem to be more of a sport compound requiring more heat to brake effectively. The rear brakes are driven by the ABS pump not directly by the pedal(Seems to release after complete stop to save the solenoids). And lastly there are six rubber hoses in the system not 4 and they are quite long(expansion leading to pressure drop in the line). To solve this I have ordered all SS hoses, I also have
ordered slotted rotors and Truck load carrying focused pads(all from stop tech). I will post the results once my lift kit arrives, I will do the brakes when everything is apart.

She is doing fine. Today, we picked up the 2020, luxury trim with the off-road package and ML. Right off the lot, I noticed much improved brakes over our 2019. The ML system also sounded a bit better. Would like to hear if others have noticed this too. Starfire pearl with black interior is a beautiful combination.

The new one does have a minor wheel balance issue, I think. Will wait a few days to see how it does as the engine opens up.

Cheers.

I've owned the LC120 in Toyota trim (Prado) and agree that the material and construction quality is a bit better overall than the LC150. However, the overall relative modernity of the 150 as a whole makes it a better package IMHO.

Saying the GX is like a 4Runner is [almost] like saying the LX560 is like a Sequoia. GX460=LC150 & LX570=LC200, but I think I know what you mean; That the 4Runners off-road capable reputation being the comparison.

Not 'more than the 4runner', but the Lexus GX460 IS a Prado LC150. It is also called the 'Land Cruiser' in the UK as the LC200 is no longer sold there (it was called the Amazon).

I became a Lexus owner because the GX460 was the only way to buy a Prado/LC150 in the US.

The next gen Lexus LX is supposed to be different than the next gen Land Cruiser [LC300], so perhaps the next GX may also be a different vehicle from the the next gen Prado LC170.

Ideally should have kept both. Love that 470 exterior color and looks mint condition.

You’ll get thru this. 460 is no toad.

It doesn't have all of the creature comforts of my GX470 and is not as comfortable....not even close. It rides stiff, the arm rests have very little padding, and I guess I just miss my GX470. Sigh..... :/ Someone please.....change my mind!

It may be stiffer but it handles better on cornering. Every time I have to take a tight turn at a decent speed, I get amazed at Toyota's engineering on the KDSS. For how big and bulky the GX460 is, it takes turns like it's nobody business.

I was not aware that the ECO mode could be disabled / enabled?? That could make a difference but I don't know how to do that. Any advice?

Also, as suggested by an earlier response, I checked the tire pressure and they were all at 28PSI; I filled them to 34PSI and the fuel economy is certainly better 1-2 MPG on the highway.

And yes.....I removed the Yakima roof bars and the sound was noticeably less, however, these are the same bars I had on the GX470 and didn't seem anywhere near as loud. hence why I suggested the roof insulation is not as robust as the 470.

OK.....so I like it a little bit better this week!! But we still have a ways to go before we're close friends!!

Actually I was referring to the ECO mode of Pedal Commander... you can disable that ECO indicator on the dash. That doesn't actually change any performance variables. It is just driving/fuel efficiency reminder.

Since I own both I have a pretty good side by side comparison and 90% of me prefers the 470. Most of my complaints have already been mentioned in this thread but the three that are the most annoying are...

1. The bonnet (hood) vibrates rather a lot at motorway speeds.
2. Doors feel lighter, flimsier and lack the sound deadening the 470 has. Too much road and wind noise in the 460.
3. Put some 265/70/17 Ridge Grapplers on the 470 (DX4 Rebel wheels) and it has ZERO rubbing. ZERO! Put the exact same wheels and tires on the 460 and my god the rubbing is annoying when braking and turning. The 460 nose dives too much I think.

In retrospect I should of picked up another 470 and let it be that. Had it over again and I would get a 470 instead. However now I’m here and going to make the best of it. Make no mistake, both of these are PHENOMENAL trucks and we love them both.

Default It’s Gone

Hey guys, I appreciate all of the advice on the forum but I ended up letting my GX go and swapped it for a 4 Runner. All I can say is that I got nothing out of the GX except disappointment. I don’t know what the heck happened between 2007 and 2019, but it’s a totally different vehicle. I absolutely loved my 2007. Not the case with the 2019. To be 100% honest, the 4 Runner is a much better vehicle and I also get real leather seats and not plastic seats. I also get about 21MPG and not 15 like the GX was getting on the highway.
