I've been impressed with the safety features on my wife's 2020 300 NX. My 2007 4Runner has really none of those. The new 4Runner is not attractive to me for several reasons (lack of power, no V8 and others). So along comes a 2017 GX with all the features I would like to have, 51k miles for $41,000. OTD price.

4Runner is solid, 160k miles built like a Swiss watch.

Good question. The 4R has zero driver aids that we are used to on modern cars - no ACC, no blind spot monitor, no parking sensors (unless it is Limited trim).

the 2020 NX has all of the latest safety features. The GX has some of the earlier generation safety tech.

I'm in the same bind - a used GX, a new 4R or a new Grand Cherokee.

The GX was just rated as the most reliable vehicle sold in the US - easily on par with the 4R.

I feel your pain. I don't want a large car payment and the L Certified GX is in the $35k range. Will ask about the difference between earlier safety tech and todays. New 4Runners are underpowered in my view. Jeeps may have reliability but are super comfy will stellar off road manners.

I traded my 17 4Runner (SR5) for a 19 Premium 11 months ago, the 4Runner is a gutless dog compared to the GX.
However you can buy way more accessories for a 4Runner

MY20 NX is rocking LSS v2.0 in every trim level
Active Safety:
0-100 cruise control
Lane centering and cornering
Front and Rear Cross traffic braking

Passive safety:
Lane dep alert
Blind spot monitor

MY17 GX must be a luxury build, WITH the driver assistance package (usual tell is that it has a camera in under the front badge, front emblem is solid glass piece, and the steering wheel has a infrared grid on the upper column facing you)
Active Safety
25-100 mph cruise control
Front traffic braking

Passive Safety
Blind spot
Lane dep alert
Rear Cross traffic alert


Basically if safety assistance tech is paramount AND BOF, I`d be looking for a different brand. Toyota and Lexus are not doing a great job in that department specifically.

I was in the same boat, but after sitting in and driving the GX, the decision got much easier. The Lexus is on a different level than the 4runner. My dad had a Grand Cherokee. Compared to my gen 4 with about the same mileage, the 4R is still tight, where the Jeep is really showing its age.

Questions.
Can I expect the same 300k life on the GX V8 that I will get on my 4Runner V6?
Is the vehicle just to much "bigger" and handling is ropeish/sluggish?
Due to it's size is parking a pain?

For all intents and purposes, the GX is within inches of the 4Runner dimensionally and weighs about 500 pounds more. You'll notice the difference but it shouldn't be TOO different.

Parking is the same, in my experience.

It's built by Toyota so reliability and life expectancy are the same.

Does the 2nd seat fold flat? I carry 8' 4x4

Unless the 17 has the driver.support package it's not likely to have any safety features beyond parking assist sensors and bsm. The driver support package would get ya lane keep warning (no active assist, just noise warning) and radar cruise control. Nonetheless I say do it. The GX is above and beyond the 4R.
