Comparison between factory 18" rear and 17" TRD front.



Update on my minor project that has spanned about (3) different threads.

I will probably put the running boards back on eventually but this what it looks like with 265/70-R17's BFG AT TA KO2's on a set of eBay 4Runner TRD Rims. I had to add additional black undercoating to make the unfinished edge blend in but anything with added black coating disappears behind the factory boards when reinstalled. The GX460 doesn't look as good as my old 4Runner does w/o the boards (because they were designed/blended into the rest of the vehicle so well) but I will see if it grows on me at all. I didn't want to change anything that couldn't go back to factory, and I did not want to drill any holes so this is as far as I got. I might try rock-sliders in a few months or just put the boards back on but I am very happy with the tires. I am also keeping the original 18's & new Bridgestones (with TPMS sensors installed) so I can easily undo everything in about 90 minutes.

Thank you all for your help and advice on which Toyota wheels would fit, which tire size I could go to, and for connecting me with MetalTech who gave me advice on their sliders and on what my 2012 looked like w/o boards, prior to pulling them off.

Looks good with the black undercoating paint. Did the tires rub on the OEM running boards or did you just remove them as preference?

looks good! I prefer this look over factory, may do the same thing, been thinking about these oem wheels and power boards in place of factory running boards

 

Thought it was odd Lexus never offered power running boards on the 460 since they introduced optional power operated boards on the 4R starting in 2012.

 

I wouldn't mind doing this but I would have to figure out a way to retain the factory lights in the running boards.

What tires are these ? looking for something that fits with stock currently as I just got a 13 gx460.

 

Has anyone just removed their running boards without cutting the trim? To be clear, I'm saying just take the entire thing off thus eliminating the notorious bolt and it's associated issues. I did this on my 4th Gen 4runner and it looked great but the GX Trim pieces seem to have been designed for going shopping for luxury purses at the mall instead of as an over landing rig like it's cousins for some stupid reason. Anyways just wasn't sure if it was possible. I'm wanting rock sliders but won't get them for a year or 2.

 

This is a post I made a few years back with my 2nd GX…on my 4th now. I would retain the lights from underneath and swap them onto your sliders when you decide to pull the trigger. Took me a few hours to do the entire swap. Hope this helps.

It doesn't look good on a white one in my opinion, you can see all the holes and it looks kind of naked under the doors. But if you don't care about looks and just want them out of the way, yes you can take them right off.
