I'm looking into ways to make the GX our next family hauler. The issue is parking in NYC, with tight spaces, may pose a problem with the rear door. Question for owners is how high is the bottom of the door from the ground. Does it clear the hood of a typical car when opened? I'm willing to overlook the tight space behind the third row since we have a Thule roof rack, but the door may be a huge issue.

BTW, current car is a 2008 CX-9.

Don't forget you can simply pop the window instead of opening the entire door.

I was having the same problem with my Mitsubishi Montero (it also had a swing out door and no pop-up rear window). '
In those cases when I couldn't open rear door on my Montero and now on my GX, I would just fold rear seat and reach items from the back through a second row. It's not a perfect solution but it worked for me.
And I could be in small group of rear door swing out lovers but usual rear raising hatch was always a problem for me as a tall person, I would constantly forgot how low those hatches are and bump my head.

 

If you have to park on the street in tight spaces all the time and are frequently loading/unloading large, bulky cargo, it's probably not ideal for you.

Also, it opens to the driver's side, which is very convenient when you're the driver, unless and until you're parked on the right hand side of a street in a tight spot and you have to essentially unload into the street.

Parking lots, parking garage, home garage, etc. it's perfect and in many ways superior to the liftgate. Or if you're parked on the street with nothing behind you. Personally I can go home, park in my garage, close my garage door about a foot behind the truck and still open the back door to get my groceries or dog out or whatever. Can't do that with my wife's MDX with the liftgate without propping the liftgate against the garage door and ducking in and out.
