Gas mileage GX vs Sequoia
I'm starting to research about the GX460 as I prepare to get a new to me SUV within the next year or so. As I've read some posts about them, I've seen some suggestions to look at a Toyota Sequoia as well. So, then I look at those and one of the things I've looked at is gas mileage. I'm not in this to say I need the most fuel efficient vehicle but it is hard for me to swallow 12 - 13 mpg. What I'm not understanding is why are they saying the GX460 will get 16 - 17 mpg but the Sequoia is more like 12 - 13 mpg. Aren't they basically the same V8 motor? What makes them that much different. I can take 16 - 17 mpg which is was my LS430 was getting but 12 - 13.....not sure I would mentally want to accept that.
460 and previous gen seqouia are not the same v8. seqouia shared the same 5.7L v8 as the previous LC, notoriously poor gas mileage... 12-14 is average for the 5.7L. you can get 16-21 out of the GX460... 21mpg would be flat cruise control in texas going 61 mph... but you can get it because I've gotten it in the past. it averages 18mpg

Thanks. I recently had to give up my LS430 after 9 yrs and 90k miles. I mostly did mixed in city and highway most time, commute from Denton area to Ft. Worth for work, and got 20 - 21 mpg most of the time. If I did all highway, I would get about 24 mpg. Loved it on the highway. Hoping the GX460 would be similar in both feel and mpg.

If you are concerned about fuel economy you shouldn't be looking at any body on frame Toyota or Lexus products. None of them have every gotten class leading fuel economy, or even that great of fuel economy for that matter. But the less frequent trips to dealership for repair sure as hell make up for the extra money spent on fuel vs the competition.
Differences in MPG are logarithmic with respect to efficiency - so those 4mg between 12mpg and 16mpg are pretty significant. We have two cars - one the GX. Based on our driving, our total fuel consumption for both cars per year would be the same amount as just the GX if it only returned 12mpg.
I find that our MPG numbers vary wildly. In my family's case it's dependent on who's driving, whether it's short hop city driving in Ohio vs PA, or long interstate trips. My wife's GX's ('16 & '21) have always gotten high 16+ MPG in stop/go trips to/from work. (The '21 was mine and I would get 12-14 MPG in the same type of driving.) I added a '23 last June and all three have been on round trips to Florida via I-71/75 through the Tennessee and Kentucky mountains, and have gotten anywhere from 21-23 MPG. And that was between my son and I driving, averaging > 75 MPH. (The GX's love the highway!) I also found that mileage varied depending upon the gas brands used. I usually start off with the first two tanks using Costco top tier premium gas. That gets me about halfway to Florida. While I remember the gas station I filled up once with in Macon GA, don't remember the brand...it was total crap. I only got 17 on the highway. I have avoided that gas station forever more, and find that the highway averages are more like 22+. This January I'm going to try a tank of Bucee's ethanol free premium gas and see how that performs. Hope this info offers some real world perspective.

If you need the size of a Sequoia, get the Sequoia.
If you need a fancy medium size SUV, go with the GX.
Gas mileage is just a number that fluctuates all the time. It is called average mpg for that reason.

I happen to have both, and i've been tracking them using Fuelly app.
2014 GX460: average MPG 17.6 over the past 34,000 miles, with 93 gas, average $0.190/mile for gas
2019 Sequoia RWD, average 15.5 over the past 60,000 miles, with 87 gas, average $0.190/mile for gas
in my case their cost for gas per mile is identical.

I average around 15.x mpg with a mix of city and highway driving. It's a gas pig, plain and simple.
It's a heavy, old school SUV with a V8 and full time 4wd that's design will largely be outlawed over the coming years. But I love it.
