2006 GX470 ticking noise
Has anyone heard a ticking noise like this before? I’ve always noticed the GX’s and we have several Lexus owners in the family. I needed a work vehicle and I came across a 2006 GX470 with 310k miles. I had a factory airbag put on the right rear corner and the factory air ride is working great! Now I have a tick and I’m not sure if it’s coming from the engine or where.

Oh, you already bought it. I thought this was a pre-purchase question.
Do you have a check-engine light? Does the check-engine light come on as a self-test when you first turn the key? (sometimes people remove the bulb/LED to hide problems)

You're going to have to use a mechanic's stethoscope to narrow it down and find out where it's coming from.

I really hope you got that car for close to nothing. At 310k miles it's practically at the end of it's life span. That could be pistons knocking but as chiph9 pointed out a stethoscope will better help narrow it down. You should take that into a shop and get it checked out.

Another thought - sometimes the exhaust manifold will crack. A visual inspection might show soot on the outside of it.

I didn’t think $3000 was too much to have in it after I had the airbag in the rear replaced. Worse case scenario is putting a 4.7 out of a wrecked GX into it. They can be found really reasonable, but this one runs smooth as no other which is odd. It just ticks.

That's definitely not a cracked manifold. I've had two. Sounds like a mechanical tapping. When was the timing belt last was replaced?
300k is nothing for that motor and transmission as long as the vehicle was properly maintained. Plenty of life left.

Take a screwdriver and you can use that as a stethoscope as well, it wont blow your ears out, obviously you will need a longer 1, be careful. Put the metal end on the area and your ear on the end of the handle. Noise travels.

I might try the screwdriver trick y’all mentioned or I might take it to my local Toyota dealer. Our closest Lexus dealer is an hour and a half away. It’s odd that it’s a mechanical tap, but that’s probably the case. What’s odd is that it runs smooth with no misfires or rough idle or anything to have a noise like that. I appreciate it!

I'll second the recommendation to try a stethoscope (if you don't have a "mechanic's" version just pull the listening end off of a cheap walmart one to leave an open tube). I've found the device to be very useful at pinpointing sources of sound. Move the open end of the tube over any suspect area and you may be pleasantly surprised at how accurately you can locate the sound source.

First thing I would do is run seafoam thru the gas and the intake. Then put some rislone in the oil, run hard for a few minutes (drive the truck), then change the oil. May or may not help but if it’s carbon buildup it couldn’t hurt. It sounded louder by the engine fan in your video.
