Default ** WITH VIDEO** 2006 IS350 - Metal Grinding Noise (Car Owned and Driven by Woman)

Hello Gents!

I'm a 26 year old female driving a 2006 Lexus IS350 - I'm putting that as a disclaimer before I post my question as it isn't going to sound very technical, haha. Bought the car used 2.5 years ago - currently has 139,000kms.

Anyways - I've been hearing a metal grinding noise coming from my car during the following times;
1. If I take my foot off the break and allow my car to roll - I hear a grinding, almost clicking noise
2. When I turn the wheel, during a curve or making a complete turn - I hear the grinding noise
3. When I am reversing out of a parking stall - I hear the grinding noise

I cannot fully distinguish if the noise is coming from the front or rear at this point, and I'm driving myself crazy trying to figure this out. I am NO mechanic though

Recent work done to my car;
1. Oil Change 4K ago
2. Dealership changed out the CAM Control about a month ago - was getting a hard clicking upon ignition. No problem since the repair.
3. Brakes were replaced about 2 months ago - rotors were not done at the time, as it was a job done at home and I was told the rotors looked ok.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I'm also looking for a good place, IN CANADA, to purchase rotors from?? I've been reading through the forums here and a lot of the online places I see mentioned, the shipping to Canada is OUTRAGEOUS.

To be honest, the best advice I can give is to have a friend stand beside your car while you duplicate the noise. This will help you pinpoint whether it is front or rear and which side the noise is coming from. I did this recently to isolate a brake squeak that ended up coming from the right rear on my '06 IS350. Could be brakes, but seems weird that you get the noise after releasing the brakes.

also, your post looks very similar to what many men on here post - sure, there are the very knowledgeable, although there are quite a bit who know very little about the inner workings and how they all relate to one another.

that said, it sounds as though it *could* be your cv boots.

I have a video I was able to take this morning - Skip a head to the 27 second mark and you'll hear what I've been hearing. The noise is very prominent when I'm rolling, or driving below 40kms/hr - you can't hear it much once I get going faster than that. I'm very torn on if the noise if from the front or back though... I hear it best with the windows up, if that helps?

i have an 06 is350. Id take it to an indy shop and tell them about it. Check the wheel bearings. the hubs, the rotors, possible even a loose control arm or bushing rubbing against something. A well skilled tech should be able to take care of it. Good Luck

Holy crap that is weird. Definitely sounds rotational, as it slows at the same rate as you slow the car. I still think you would be well served to have someone stand beside the car while you do that to see if they can figure out where it is coming from. I know from experience that it can be very difficult to determine when you are sitting in the car. If it were a hub assembly, this would be easy to determine by jacking or lifting the car and then pulling on each wheel to see if there is any side to side play. Honestly doesn't sound like any brake noise I've ever heard unless the sound is distorted in the recording.

Just wondering why you just haven't had the dealership or any mechanic inspect the car? Sounds like you just had a bunch of work done by them anyway, this should be another item for them to check. As the sound is rotational, it could be brakes dragging, CV joints gone bad, drive shaft out of balance or rubbing on something like the exhaust etc.

In any case, even if someone on here pinpoints the exact problem, it's unlikely you'll be able to repair it yourself (male or female) unless you've had some mechanical experience. Good luck!

As far as buying parts in Canada as opposed to buying online in the US and paying ridiculous shipping.... You may want to check this site. I searched a few parts for our cars and they appear to be reasonable. I'm sure some of the Canadian members will have some other suggestions and perhaps some feedback on this website if they've ordered from them before.

I too live in Canada, Ontario to be exact and I've found a place to buy cheaper parts. Oemlexusparts.com. They won't ship to Canada either but there is a place in Port Huron MI that you can have them shipped to and you just go over and pick them up at $5 per package. If you're anywhere near there it's a great alternative.

UPDATE - Took the Car to the Lexus Dealership and it turns out when my BF did my brakes, there was a spring or something that broke? The kit we purchased from Cycberbrake.com did not come with a new one, so he improvised... Guess it didn't work so well as that broke and it was the brakes making the noise, hence why the noise went away with braking! The total cost of repair is $190.00, so not to bad!

Glad you got it resolved, but $190 sucks! The brake hardware kits are available for $20-$30 and those are accessible without even removing the pads. Curious as to what your invoice looks like......

So $190 took care of it? Glad it's resolved. Sounded like a faulty at home brake job to begin with,

Could have taken it to a private mechanic for a simple fix like that...but $190 for piece of mind isn't bad. Glad you got it resolved.
