Default How Do Front Shocks Work Without Air When Using Comfort/Aport Mode??

What do the actuators on top of the front coilovers do on the 2005 GX470? Since they don't hook up to air or hydraulics, I don't understand how they operate. I understand that the rear springs are air actuated and I believe the rear shocks are air actuated, but I don't understand how the front works when selecting sport or comfort mode. Can anyone clue me in?

The comfort setting dial in the cab adjusts the dampening of the shocks front and rear. The motor on the top of the shocks turns a **** on the shock to adjust the dampening, similar to how aftermarket adjustable shocks work. Similar to this:

The rear airbag is just used to control the height of the rear and not the dampening. The shocks do that. Although having more/less air in the airbag will effect dampening as well.

Like teejnut said. The actuator is just a small motor that turns what would be a **** on top of the shaft. This changes the dampening rate of the shock.

Specifically, it opens/closes a valve that controls how fast fluid is allowed to flow through the shock. Smaller opening = firmer shock and vice versa.
