Figured I'd contribute to the forum after buying an 08 GX470 two weeks ago.

I figured out how to disable the GX470 daytime running lights (DRL or DTRL). Initially I tried to match the pin position from the Tacoma instructions, but that didn't work (the wire colors were different). So I tried matching the wire colors (mint green with a black stripe) and it worked.



The black flasher box (part number 81980-35020) is located on the back side of the main cabin junction box to the left of the steering wheel. The Tacoma DRL install instructions are pretty much the same for getting to the GX470 junction box (note there is one hidden bolt behind the wood trim to the left of the steering wheel, just pop off the wood trim to get to it)

Or you can use the Techstream software to disable the DRL's, I believe. I saw the option when I was trying Techstream a couple of months ago, but I left my DRL's enabled.

On my prior 4th Gen 4Runner, I did exactly the mod described above, but also wired in a switch on the green wire so I could toggle the DRL's on and off at will. Really wasn't that useful though.

 

Techstream does this.

 

Out of curiosity, why would you want to disable them?

 

Couple reasons for me:
1. Aesthetics
2. On my old 4Runner, I was worried that running the incandescent DRLs would cause a problem with heat in the ARB bull bar signal lamps. Switched to LED later and turned them back on.

 

Some people don't like the look.

Others don't like that they'll have to replace the bulbs sooner (they aren't easy to reach in some cars)

In my case, I don't like them because the decrease the relative visibility of motorcycles (who, before the late 90's, were the only vehicles with them on all the time, so they'd stand out).

I disabled mine via Techstream. I didn't like the corners as DRL, my 2000 LC has standard DRLs, I believe "dimmed" high beams lor maybe low beams.

 

In addition to the reasons above, I like being a little more stealth at night while parked with the engine running.

Any suggestion on a Techstream info thread and/or a link to a specific cable that works (ebay?)

 

Tecstream does it. I disabled mine on all 3 cars. You can get it at Amazon.

 

Which one did you buy (Amazon?) and what is your OS on your laptop? I have two I can use - a) PC with 64-bit Win8 or b) MacBook Pro with OS X Yosemite. I want to change the user config settings, such as disabling the beep when locking/unlocking. TIA

 

You have to use Windows. I don't know how Win8 works and I've heard some people had trouble with drivers on a 64 bit OS.

 

It seems burtoncr's solution is simple. The DRL / turn signal bulbs burn our very fast so prolonging the life is a good thing

 

Update....followed burtoncr's directions and it was easier than I thought. Took about 1 hour and works perfect.

Thanks burtoncr! Now maybe I can get more than 6 months out of the bulbs.

 

I went with the TIS route and it was a lot longer than a hour! LOL Figuring out the software install and getting it up and running was a nightmare, but in the end it was worth it for the fact that other settings can be changed. I cannot tell you how close I was to going burtoncr's route though.

I thought hard about the TIS however I do not have a Windows based mobile computer. One hour and two beers was the cheap route :-)
