Hello all

I just bought a 2007 GX470 and am liking it allot, I have been reading here till my eyes bleed lots of good stuff.

I need tires and am looking at the Cooper Discoverer A/T3's in size 285/70R17 , will that fit a stock non lifted truck? Will they rub?

Also is there a speedo correction fix when going to a bigger tire size?

I believe 265/70/17 is the largest you can go with no lift and get no rubbing.

Based on above info, the Tire DIA will increase from 30.6 to 31.7". Good to know, because I just purchased 265/65/18 Cooper AT3s and those are 31.5", which should clear.

We're running 265/70/17 General Grabber AT2's on our GX and I get a tiny bit of rubbing on the driver side at full left turn, nothing to be worried about. I think that size is perfect unless you're getting into heavy mods, then the 285 would be OK.

I hope the Nitto Terra Grapplers I just picked up work out and don't rub! Same size 265/70/17.

I just got these Duratracs in 265/70/17 and they do rub, slightly, at full lock on the fender liner just behind/below the fog lights. On both sides, it's an area that seems unnecessarily bulged into the wheel-well. Heat gun should fix that. Then, gotta take care of the toyota center caps.

Those are the wheels I was originally looking for when I got the GX, post some more pics!

I'm running the same size Duratracs on FJ Cruiser wheels, and I get no rubbing that I'm aware of, do you know the width/backspacing of those wheels?

I'm running BFG AT 265/70/17 on mine. I had them installed at stock height and they rubbed only when the wheels were fully cocked. Since then I raised the ruck 2" and I could probably go 285 without rubbing.

Keep in mind that if you go bigger than 265/70/17 and you have tow hitch installed, you won't be able to store your spare tire. Mine barely fits now. I'm looking for rear door mount options so I can go a little bigger tire next time.

Another thing to consider is the gear ratio. I've heard that it is pretty difficult to change out the gear ratio on our trucks (availability) if you decide to go taller tires.

Anyone care to offer if MPG took a hit going +1 from OEM sizing to 265x70x17

I'm in the market for tires and they clearly look better than OEM, but if it's dropping MPGs by 2 or more on the wife's grocery-getter it's a consideration...

At present averaging 17.5 even mix of town and highway. 19.5 on highway trips (at 75mph). Reasonable...

I definitely took a hit after adding Duratracs. It looks like about 1.5 loss around town and haven't done any road trips. My highway mileage was right at 17 on a 660 mile round trip through Western Idaho at 80mph on cruise. I was getting 16 around town before the tire change.

These values are based on the truck's computer and don't account for errors from differing tire diameters.

In all fairness, those numbers aren't good for anything as they don't account for the increased diameter. The computer shows mileage got worse, but you're now travelling farther than the computer thinks so without correcting the numbers, you can't even say if they are better or worse with any certainty.

Okay then:

Before (265/65/17 = 30.6" diameter)
After (265/75/17 = 31.7")

so the ratio is 1.0359477124183 or about 3.6% larger and therefore mileage should only drop by 3.6% or 0.62 MPG (17.0MPG x 0.036).

Even still, you're right, my numbers still aren't comparable because I have been almost exclusively driving in the city since I changed the tires.

In regards to regearing the Lexus, the drive train is interchangeable with the 4Runner I thought, I will have to look into this as I was told somewhere along the lines that the V-8 4Runner stuff would work.

I am planning on going all out with a top shelf Icon coil overs and rear shocks and running a 32 inch tire, I would asume I will need gearing. I will make a phone call and report back to this thread.
