Cost of ownership
I've been looking at picking up a 03-05 gx. After talking to my brother in law that has owned a Company Ford Tauras he tells me they are expensive to take care of.... I'm confused. I have a VW Toaureg under warranty. Over the last 7 months. They have paid $9k in repairs, one of the repairs was the timing belt/water pump $2900. After talking to local repair shops in Denver that same repair on a GX is $1100-1600. I think either he must go to the dealer for everything or he is off on his opinion of expensive.... I was told the same thing about my FJZ80.

He probably takes it to the dealer for every little thing. That will add up quick!
i just bought my GX but Ive done alot of reading about them and they dont seem to have high maintenance. Of course Lexus parts are expensive if you do need to repair anything. Sewell online has discounted parts. Just find a good indy in your area that specializes in Toyota / Lexus.
Im loving the GX so far!

I wouldn't trust a guy that drove a Ford Taurus. You shouldn't either. With Lexus, you typically are going to see a higher up front cost when you buy it and a less frequent need for maintenance. Lexus service is expensive when you need it, but you can get the same mechanically sound service from a Toyota dealer (or an Indy).
Timing belt cost me $700 at the Toyota dealer (with water pump).

Helloooo, you are buying a luxury vehicle, with real wood on the interior, soft ride, classic style. It is going to cost more overall. It comes done to personal choice, reliability, safety, and what do you want to be seen in (status). Gas mileage is not that great.
I wanted to roll down the highway, in a vehicle that weighs 5000 lbs. Look out Yaris, Smart Car, and Aveo. I don't want to come out second best in an accident. 10 air bags, 5000 lbs, WINNER! WINNER! What do you want to put your family in???

I haven't noticed the expese of owning a Lexus GX. I bought my '03 about 6 yrs ago with 30K on the odom and so far the only thing I've paid on it was oil changes, brake job, tires and 90K service. The oil changes I do myself and costs me a few dollars more then the other cars own. The brake job was expensive at $600 (needed new rotors) and the 90K service costed me $1,200 ($800 parts, $400 - discounted labor). The tires I just replaced last year for $750. At 92k miles, I've spend about $2,750 in maintenance, not bad for 60K miles. Only thing I need to do soon is replacement of suspension which will probably run me $2K but I wouldn't have to do anything for another 50K+ miles.
Was talking to a friend of mine who owns a Mercedes SUV, he spent $2k recently to fix some steering problem.
