Default new wheels and tires : no plans on lifting

Time for new wheels and tires. I had 17" & 20" BBS-RDs and 18" BBS-RWs on '06 Tundra and to me BBS' just look so classy and simple. I think they'll look great on the GX.

My first choice was to go with the 18" RWs. Its a nice compromise between 17" and 20" but I found out today that Toyota discontinued them and theyre no longer for sale so that leaves me with the RDs. I havent decided if I want to go with 17" or 20"?

I did a search and read our stock 17x7.5 wheel has an offset of 25mm, can anyone confirm this? Im trying to figure out what size tire I can run. I took a look at the GX and it looks like I can run a 31-32" tire without any problems as long as the offset / backspace is right. If the 25mm is correct this is what Im thinking:

20" BBS-RD
20 x 9.5
+10mm offset

Nitto terra
285/50/20
31.26" diameter

_________________

17" BBS-RD
17 x 8
+5mm offset

Nitto terra
265/65/17
30.55" diameter

Just for reference, heres what the 20" and 17" RDs looked like on my Tundra.

20" : 295/45/20 : Lifted 2.5" w/ Bilsteins

17" : 285/70/17 : Lifted 2.5" w/ Bilsteins

CAUTION: you'll have to get the resident "expert" approved listing before you can properly proceed. Know you may also have to re-do your Tundra set-up to ensure compliance too

Welcome to the forum, RCsGX. While most GX owners don't do major mods, we still love to see what others are doing to "their" GX.

My GX came with chrome wheels, I dont like chrome wheel plus I like wheels that have a lip to them. Im leaning towards the 20s but the 17s weigh considerably less and they have a taller sidewall for more comfort.

Decisions, decisions.......

If you were local, I'd actually give you my wheels for free. They fit perfectly, can accommodate 285/60/18 AT tires if you want the more aggressive look, and are black.

I got a new set and now they're just sitting in storage.

I'd personally go with 18s as the 17s have too much sidewall. I absolutely don't like the low profile tire look on real trucks. Trucks, like the GX/4R, should be a bit rugged. Leave the upsized, lopro stuff for the clueless, attn ***** Hummers out there. 18s also have a ton of tires available. I'm really enjoying my Toyo Open Country ATs.

You're on the right path.

Surprisingly, your local tire chain has a pretty decent selection at great prices. I mean, I was pleasantly shocked to find hub-centric, good offset and wider width wheels for $200 a pop as I'm used to $1500+ per corne in the Rover and Porschay. If you run into any issues, these corporate chain tire vendors provide full coverage. I've had no peeling, no rubbing, no air pressure loss on my chain store wheels. I've been thru snow, rain, ice, you name it. No complaints when it comes to great value!

Good luck, bud.

$200 vs $1500... ya think cast vs. forged has anything to do with it?

Porschay... WTH? It's pronounce either 'Porsch' or 'Porscha'. Former is 'acceptable' but latter is "more" correct as it's someone's proper name. Then again, Porsche owners and legitimate car enthusiasts already know this though...

When I first was considering adding a GX to my stable and asked the forum about 20 inch wheel options and pics, I was basically told I was ghetto, shouldnt be looking at a GX but other vehicles instead, and on and on. At first I thought man, these GX guys are a bunch of rude obnoxious jerks! I realized within a few weeks that it wasnt the forum. Then got a bunch of PMs also warning me that it wasnt all of us, it was one particular element. Then I saw a "hey, I spray painted my badges, woo hoo!!!" thread, lol.

OP, I dont think it makes sense to go with anything under a 20 on these trucks and from what very little I know about you thus far, Im relatively comfortable in saying that if you do, you will at some point regret the decision and swap out to 20s anyway. Am I right?

My GX is black. So far, exterior mod-wise, all I have done is have the front two windows tinted to the same color and shade as the rear OEM window tint. Im shopping wheels as well and will likely be going with 20 inch black wheels with a polished lip and some good, all season rubber.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I think 18s look perfect on the GX. Unfortunately though I cant find any OEM 18" wheels with a lip on them. So that leaves me with the RDs.

When I swapped the 18s for the 20s on my Tundra the ride did suffer and when I swapped the 20s out for the 17s it felt like I was riding on pillows. Having just sold my lowered V, Im loving how smooth the GX rides, its so comfortable...Id hate to screw it up w/ 20s.
