Default 07 Wheel Corrosion question

Looking at an 07 Sport with 17" alloys, the truck is still under waranty and is a CPO also. The rims have the corrosion bubbles often mentioned on this site. My question is what to do with them if I buy it.

I would want the dealer to do something with them before I take delivery but not just sand, spray with cheap paint. Has anyone had success with the dealer in addressing this issue?

Just looking for opinions as the GX is mint but the wheels are not.

I was able to ge the dealership to replace mines with new oem rims. The other option you have would be to use them as a negotiating factor on price and then buy either after market rims or another toyota oem rims that would fit.

Personally if I were you, see if they would switch them out for the 18" gx460 rims...you can say that if they swap them out with a replacement, the replacement will get bubbles in a few years.

Did they replace these as a warranty item?

This is a known problem on Lexus/Toyota vehicles. Lexus views it on a case-by-case basis. Claims it caused by road salt. Has the vehicle been owned only in the south? Don't imagine there's much use for road salt in the winter. Negotiate $1600 off the selling price of the vehicle and buy new rims?

I got Lexus to replace my rims with repainted/reconditioned rims done by AlloyWheelSpecialist.

They'll have to do something because I won't take it as is, if we agree on price and my trade value. I'd take a real refinish job but not a spot sand and spray.

Your local Lexus dealer probably uses a local wheel specialist, so it shouldn't be a problem. On the other hand, weren't you looking at the sport suspension GX? If so, they're hard to find.

The truck is a GX Sport with the KDSS, I don't know if these rims are any different in construction from the regular wheels. Maybe I'll try going for new rims and see where it goes.

Good luck with that! Post pictures if you make the purchase.

Hopefully we can put something together - trade and rims at this point.

Thanks

Kalcris, Ive been there already and trust me if they are refinished the bubbles will come back. I had mine sandblasted primed and repainted and it lasted 1 year. I purchased 17" Toyota chrome Sequoia wheels, probably not smart as I live in Boston. I have a few pits already but nothing close to the corrosion on my original GX wheels. There is a post somewhere that a dealer opened a carton containing new OEM GX wheels and they had the beginning stages of the bubbles already- So much for the road salt excuse. Anyways its a known problem so replacements of aftermarket or Toyota wheels are the only cure.

I'm in Boston Too, didn't buy either of the 2 Sports I looked at but did buy 08 CPO, should have it tomorrow. Has some of the bubbles but not as bad as the other two.

LOL! You're in Boston? Thought you were in MS, I guess you have a typo for location. Buy non-Lexus/Toyota rims to avoid the rust/pitting problems.
