Man has a preference, nothing wrong with that.
The 4Runner steering wheel is the same, so if you can find a matching donor to swap (as someone mentioned on page 1) or buy it from the Toyota dealer and ebay your wood wheel.
Steering wheels started out as wood, then it moved to bakalite and then to injection molded plastics. Leather became a luxury item as it is obviously the most comfortable. The wood/leather is the recent trend but many people do prefer a full leather wheel.

I prefer leather myself, especially since the GX wood on the steering wheel is so heavily laminated or varnished that it might as well just be plastic.
I guess if worse comes to worse I can get some kind of leather wrap. It will probably be almost impossible to drive with my fleece gloves - way too slippery.

Alex,
I'm now at 1,000 miles on my GX and am planning a long post on the differences between it and my old Touareg, but the T-reg stranded me 7 times and required 5 batteries in 28 months. After dying on Dec 1st and then again on Dec 17th, both times needing a tow since it wouldn't accept a jump, I went and drove the GX. Bought it on the spot. My wife asked me if I was happy about a new truck and I said "No, just disappointed with VW"
