Default excessive heat

All of a sudden, there is excessive heat from under our 2004 GX. the center console is hot and an item actually melted that was sitting on the carpet in the middle of the vehicle. the back of the driver seat is warm as well

we just replaced serpentine belt and repaired a pulley tensioner but wondering if it could be bad cat converter?

puzzled

thanks

It could possibly be a bad cat. Normally if they're that bad it will throw a code, but we have had a couple car in our shop with cats that actually get red hot and not cause the CEL to come on.

Bad cat would also be my guess. Also check your EGR valve (and oil level) for a possible cause if you find it's running cherry red. A bad valve can suck in oil and cause the engine to run rich, overheating the cat.
