I’m sad…I pumped a bunch of cash into a GX and 1500 miles into the project the gears are grinding when going into 4th. It’s a sweet rig (not my daily driver fortunately), but this tranny has me mad...
206k on the clock, no rust, new dash, clean truck…I never would have thought the GX would have had a failure of this magnitude.
The goal was to build it and flip it (thought I could make a little $$$ since I did all the installs), but that plan is gone. Knowing the plan isn’t to keep the GX would you rebuild it (likely around $3500) or buy a used one (around $1400) and get it installed (I could do the install but really don’t want too), around $2500 (junkyard trans and install labor)?
Also, based on all my research a Sequoia/LX/Tundra trans doesn’t fit as it doesn’t have the same mounting plate for the console shifter like the GX…if anyone knows different I’m all ears (Sequoia/Tundra trans are about $700 cheaper based on my research).
I have an OBD2 reader and it hasn’t kicked any codes, at least none for the tranny…the damn blower motor kicks codes, 0418, 2445 every time I start the truck. I clear them each start up.
You can try a fluid + filter change. The mechanic will have to drop the pan on the transmission, and inspect it for metal shavings.
"Some" is normal (especially since no one ever does fluid changes on these vehicles). But chunks...
So I dropped the pan…fluid was clean, pan was full of metal. Magnets were covered in metal (about 1/8” thick of metal, no chunks). Tranny is shot between 3-4. It won’t go into 5th. Time for a tranny swap…🤬
206k on the clock and the transmission is blasted. I hope you folks have better luck with your GX than me…
