Sanding Chrome Wheels
Chrome
Brushed Look
The finish on my stock chrome wheels has always bothered me. I don't care for how shiny they are. I'd like to just replace the wheels all together but money is always the limiting factor. Has anyone used scotchbrite or sanded the chrome on their wheels for a matte brushed look? I've seen this done on some 911's to get a brushed nickel appearance and really reduce the sheen of the loud chrome wheels. I didn't know how well it worked on the stock GX wheels.
I am a 911 guy, having owned nearly 40 air cooled 911's over the past 30 years. The Fuch's you posted were polished not chrome. Chroming a wheel is a complex electrochemical process. You're adding nickle and chrome to the wheel. They can be stripped but its a different process than simply sanding the finish.
The GX came with painted alloy wheels as stock. But some model years had a US distributor option for chrome wheels. Both will start to corrode after a while...
If you decide to go for the satin look, you'll want to dismount the tires as the corrosion often starts in the bead area and you'll want that to be clean & smooth to get a good air seal.
