Default 4 wheel system?

All,

I was reading through the manual today and found this on page 311. It is in reference to the FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM. It states:

"H" (high speed position, center differential unlocked): Lever at "H", center differential lock button left out.

Use this fo rnormal driving on all types of roads, from dry hard-surfaced roads to wet, icy or snow-covered roads. This position goves greater economy, quietest ride, least wear and better vehicle control."

I kow this means that the vehicle will be in "full time" 4wd, but doesn't being in "full time" 4wd mean less economy, not the quietest ride, more wear and better vehicle control?

Does "greater ecoomy" mean better gas mileage?

I might have to try this next time I fill up and see if mpg improves, its quieter and has better control...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

your 4wd drive system should allways be on high while your driveing on the road.. 4wd L you are not supposed to go over 30mph i think..

Hi,

Ok, your GX is indeed full-time 4wd with a Torsen center diff. You should be 4-HIGH range all the time, except when you're off-roading or about to slowly launch your boat. 4-LOW means torque multiplication. In the GX, your torque is multiplied by 2.57 times when you're in 4LOW. In 4-LO, you use up more gas.

Locking the center diff should ONLY be done on loose surfaces. If you use it on dry surfaces, you will get gear grinding from the locked center diff. Locking the center diff splits power 50/50.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. My real question is, does the car get better gas mileage while in 4H? Right now, the 4W shifter is in neutral and the drive gear is in D. So I guess I'll call it "Neutral Drive." Should it be changed to "High Drive" for everyday driving? AM I missing something here? HELP!

Thumbs up

FWIW, Neutral is disengaged completly and will not move the vehicle. If it moves it is not in neutral.
