Thanks for checking. Yeah, your're right. It appears that I hit a slight head wind. Almost if we lose torque at that range. It is more apparant when you are going slightly up-hill where there is a little strain on the engine. But past 2000 rpm, the engine is real smooth.
Does anyone have the torque/hp curve that shows a graphical description of the useable range of this engine.
At least I'm not the only one. Anyone else?

I notice two things.

Firstly it has been very cold (10-20F) lately. After starting the engine. I notice the power steering pump makes a winey noise for about the first 5-10 seconds if you attempt to make any turns in the wheel. Typically by the time I back out and put the truck in drive the sound is gone.

Second has to do with the transmission. Same situation, cold. Backing up then putting the truck in drive. Waiting for the apparent indications the truck is in drive and then I step on the gas and the trainy seems to want to shift once more, like it was never in. But knowing this, I have actually been waiting extra long to make certain it's not me just being in a hurry. We are talking about waiting a 2 full seconds and then pulling away.

Not big deals, and the weather has been cold. I will let everyone know if it turns into anything.

 

I had to have teh tires re balanced yesterday. Fixed the problem.

I hadn't noticed this, but I will tell you that at highway speeds of 60-70 where the RPM's are around 1500-1900 the engine gets far better gas mileage than once it cruises over 2000 rpms.

It is a night and day difference in fuel economy.

 

Uhh, poor gas mileage comes with the SUV territory.
V-8=poor gas mileage
5000lbs=poor gas mileage

If your all of the above, expect 15MPG. It just is part of the purchase.

 

But the GX only weighs 4670.. Woo hoo - great gas mileage!!!

but then the $30 fillup sucked but thats ok

 

4670 is very heavy by SUV standards. Remember that's the curb weight. Most SUV's are about a thousand pounds lighter.

Actually, there are NO SUVs (except maybe the mini-SUVs) that weigh 3600 lbs.

Most of mid-size SUVs nowadays weigh ABOVE 4000 lbs. MDX weighs about 4400 lbs...Mitsubishi Montero Sport weighs around 4000 lbs...Montero weighs around 4300 lbs...my '02 4Runner Ltd. 4wd weighs about 4100 lbs...Land Rover Disco II HSE weighs about 4800 lbs...LX470 weighs about 5400 lbs...Range Rover about 5500 lbs...Hummer H2 weighs about 6400 lbs.

Above 4000 lbs is the norm for SUVs.

My gas mileage "expectations" are set totally by what the window sticker says. My experience has always been pretty close to what the manufacturer says it will be.

Usually I am right in the middle between city and highway. In the GX I am below the 15 city and that is disturbing.

 

As of yesterday I was getting 17.5mph with urban driving and little traffic. Looks like the 15 to 18 will be real.

 

I am getting 17.5 mpg according to the computer but I am only getting 15 when I do the math (miles driven/gallons pumped).

Are people who are getting 17-18 mpg "doing the math" or trusting the computer?

 

For the 1800 miles that I have had the vehicle I am averaging 17mpg even. I will start doing the math because this is bases solely on what the computer is telling me.

I take it from reading the forum that the majority of you are pretty happy with your GX...other than gas mileage. I am still on the wait list for my GX and have never had a car that gets good gas mileage (sports cars don't either) so I am prepared for the expense on gas. I have always heard a car gets better after broken in at about 10,000 miles, don't know if that is true, but may be! Could someone tell me if the door locks, automatically lock when the suv is put into drive? Just wondering, can't seem to find the answer. I hope they do, that is a nice feature. Guess I'll be back on here when my GX comes in...may be 2004 before I get it! lol

 

Good news: The default is for them to lock - although you can change it as you can a number of other settings.
