The GX uses pretty heavy duty electrical components for the lighting system, there should be no problem with not using a relay. As far as I know, Mcculloch, phillips and hella ballast will limit the starting amp to about 8A, if you keep your headlight fuse at 10A, you should be save. I havent upgrade or blow a fuse so far.
