Default DVD Operation - HELP!

Hi - I'm new to this so please bear with me.

What is with the DVD operation in the GX?! I have 3 problems:

1. First of all, what on earth is that bizarre message (really want to use a more colorful word there, but don't want to offend...) that appears on the screen when it first comes on. Who wrote that and what are the trying to say? Just in case you're not familiar with this message, here it is (and I quote):

"It appears operation button if you touch screen at front seat, or push cursor key of rear seat remote controller during playing disc"

TEE HEE.. it still makes me giggle.

2. Second problem, why do I have to press 3 buttons on the remote to get the picture to come up when I get into the car again? We get back into the car and turn it on. The DVD is on; I can hear it. The screen is down. BUT NO PICTURE!? From what I was able to figure out, I have to press "DVD" + "CURSOR" + "CURSOR" on the remote to just get a normal picture. I must be doing something wrong... please help.

3. Oh and I cannot for the life of me get the DVD to turn off. I'm sure that's just pure user error on my part. Tried pressing "OFF" on the remote. Pressing stop just stops the movie. But what if the movie's over, the kid is sleeping and you just want to turn the thing off? I know I can toggle back to the FM with the MODE button on the steering wheel... but sheesh. I just want the DVD off. Even more annoying when the movie is still running and you really just want to turn it off.

What year GX do you have? And I assume you are talking about the built in, Lexus RSES, not an aftermarket.

Hi Nomini4me,

First of all welcome to the Lexus Family and congrats on the GX470! I'll answer the questions in reverse order:

3. When the kids are sleeping or when finished with the DVD, just simply switch to a different source, eg, Radio, CD player, or cassette. Another option is to Eject the DVD out of the unit. As this ALL of the sources are tied into the audio system it's an ALL on or ALL off option. Another way to look at it is this, suppose you were had a cassette (tape) in your radio and it was playing, how do you turn IT off? You either eject the cassette out or you power off the stereo completely, same principal with DVD player

2. This is by design, you'll have to press the DVD button and then the OK button once not twice (???). Drove my son up the wall originally but it's now 2nd nature, I have no idea, why they would design it this way...

1. Unfortunately I have never seen this error msg before, how/when does it come on. I also have a 2005 GX, I purchased mine in March. Perhaps if you can show us how you get this error message, we can help you out?

At any rate, congrats again on your new GX, you'll love it!

Thanks for the help! I guess I was thinking of it like the DVD player in my house, you know, you can actually turn it off. But you're right - it turns off when you switch to another source.

I also discovered (thanks to other postings) that when the parking brake is on you can control the DVD from the front screen. That helps and reduces it down to a 2 step restart (still too much work... need to wean the kids off the DVD for short trips).

I'm slowly but surely getting used to the way this sophisticated car works!
