Angry 2004 GX470 intermittent driveshaft thumping question?

I have a 2004 GX470 delivered in 12/2003. My VIN ending in nnn33033

This have intermittent driveshaft thumping problem. The problem is very intermittent and barely noticeable.

The service ref. at the dealer is in the “show me “ mode. I drove around with the tech but can not reproduce it during the 20 minutes drive.

The service ref. Informed me there is a service bulletin for the driveshaft thumping noise problem for the 2004 GX470 with VIN ending before nnn32069. My VIN ending in nnn33033.

I probably going to reschedule another test drive with the tech and take him on a longer drive next time.

Does anyone out there with 2004 GX470 with VIN ending AFTER nnn32069 experience with this problem? Any suggestion?

ZingZang.....

I too got delivery in December 2003. My vin number ends with 33996.

The thumping I get is rare and slight. I have been waiting for it to get worse or go away. I can force a thump by raising and lowering the rear end via the switch.

I have discovered that the truck is super sensitive on the front end vibration. The trick is to keep the front end wheels balanced properly. I have the tires rotated every 5000 miles and at the same time have the front tires balanced. I understand that Lexus engineers are aware of the problem and are working on a fix for the steering mechanism.

I have an '04 bought in Sept '03 which developed the thump. I now have 34K on it. It didn't seem to get louder, just more frequent. Actually, it doesn't seem to be a noise as much as it's a feeling of sudden movement of a large mass. The mechanic couldn't make it thump, but my VIN was in the range of VINs that Lexus listed on the bulletin. Two weeks age they replaced the driveshaft.

The next day it thumped twice, but has not done it since. They gave me a RX loaner-made me appreciate the GX!

my new thump now, is connected to the brakes that my dealer fixed. when i had my 20k service, they found brake leak on the left rear, so they fixed that. after fixing it, the thump slooooowly came back. now i can reproduce the thump, by just releasing the brakes!
