Default Rear Spoiler Installation Using 3M Tape

I'm thinking about installing an after-market spoiler using double-sided tape in lieu of drilling and bolting. A car enthusiast suggested using that super strong mounting tape by 3M (I believe it is product # 3M06397). He said that he used the tape to install a spoiler on his IS300 and after the install the spoiler wouldn't budge at all. The significant benefit of using tape is that I wouldn't have to drill 4 holes -- all I need to do is drill 1 hole for the 3rd brake light. And it would minimize the residual metal shavings that could potentially cause rust to develop. The downside to using the tape is that I don't know how long the tape will last before it decides to let the spoiler drop off the rear door. Furthermore, if I decide to remove the spoiler for whatever reason it would be a definite pain. Anyone has any thoughts on this? Your comments and/or suggestions would be much appreciated.

When you say IS300 spoiler are you referring to the lip type that are on BMW M3, or the big metal wing spoilers.

The spoiler you are buying is it the OEM style spoilerdepot.com sells, the GX spoiler attaches to the rear of the truck in 2 spots, Im gonna say the tape will hold but not for long considering the weight and downforce of the wind, don't really wanna loose a 200-300 dollar wing or have it land on someone else car.

Considering just the weight of the wing I would say no vent visor fall off and their plastic held on by 3M tape, the install should not be hard I've done it and the holes are usually covered up with some kinda rust proofing and then a gasket between the body and spoiler or a body shop could do it.

I drilled the holes for my spoiler. Don't think the tape will hold long on a hanging style spoiler. Go to irontoad.com and ask for a price. The spoiler is OEM. Spoilerdepot has a cheaper reproduction that's not exact, and the mounting hardware doesn't look as good or easy as the OEM spoiler. The paint had dirt in it too. You get and end up with what you pay for.

I would advise against installing with the tape only. I tired a simular approach with my Miata and it failed miserably. The weight of the wind downforce combined with warm summer temps will cause the spoiler to sag and shortly thereafter, fall off...which could cause damage to your car or the driver that happens to be behind you once the tape goes south.
If you properaly seal the drill holes (primer or rust inhibitor on the bare metal) before you apply the spoiler, you should have no rust problems.
