Default Reverse Slipping - 2004 GX470 254k

Hi All,

curious if anyone had advice or has had a similar experience. Been having a whine that was finally resolved with a fluid change. I’m kicking myself because I drove with the noise for way too long. Reverse had been slow to engage for a week prior to it going out completely. Following the fluid change and filter replacement, checked the solenoids that manage reverse among other things, and all engaged properly. Following the fluid change, the transmission shifts great in all gears(never had issues with any of the forward gears) except reverse where it struggles on any sort of incline to catch the slow engages slipping all the while. If on level ground, it does okay.
is there anything else besides rebuild that I should look at?

thank you

Two possible causes 1) the fluid level is not correct 2) the clutch packs are worn caused by lack of maintenance.

thank you! Fluid level should be gtg. Definitely lack of maintenance on my part, but they told me “it’s lifetime fluid” without that dipstick haha. Clutch pack makes sense with the way it catches and slips depending on load.

I’m guessing there’s a different clutch in the pack for 4wd low than high, because it reverses just fine on steep hills in 4wd low.

The high/low range ratio is done after the transmission in the transfer case (which is entirely separate from the transmission with it's own fluid)

I suspect that in low range the transmission sees lower torque, so it doesn't slip.

Obviously you can use low range to back out of the garage/etc. then return to high range for now.
But eventually the clutch plates will wear so far that even that doesn't work.

Several of the shops around here are saying it’s cheaper to buy a reman from Lexus than get my existing transmission rebuilt. Currently in the process of exploring my options.

Why clutch pack if it's just reverse that's having issue. R is rarely used in terms of power.
I forget if R is shared clutch pack though, if it is then perhaps it's a solenoid issue.
When was last time the pan filter was replaced? At 254kmi you should be on filter #2.

I forget where, but you can measure ohms of the solenoids to verify that they are still good on the coil side. Being stuck is kinda rare.
