no **** good to know that, so if it makes the noise when cold it that normal, or is the transmission fluid low and thats why it makes that noise?

Cold is pretty normal. If it makes it all the time, or you notice it when pulling away from a stop slowly increasing the revs, it's definitely low. I intentionally add 4 ounces to mine after setting the level to give me a little more time before I start hearing that noise again. I am pretty confident there is wear inside causing the level to drop along with the lighter elements of the oil evaporating over time with heat.

I know it's hard to determine without a video/sound clip, I'm just wondering if this is just normal noise in these cars. Thanks.
OP, is it currently cold where you are at?

ok so mine must by low because when i set the fluid level the car was not fully cold and u said it takes hours for the trans to cool, so tomorrow im gonna chcek the level again. ill let it sit over night in 30 degree temps and it should be cold by the next day and ill start it up and warm it up and check the level. whats the temperature range again 113F??
im gonna use my obd2 dongle that shows trans temp to measure the temps is that good enough.???

Ya 113F and OBD unit will give you the trans temp.

Had this whining on my GS350. I had done the Trans drain and fill. Did not do the temp check measured what came out and put the same back in.
Re-did it and measured + a quart more. Did the temp check and overflow, then added back a 1/2 quart more. Whining was gone immediately. 5k miles later still no whining. I have also heard of Trans that came low on fluid from the Factory.

It is cold now, but the noise was there during the summer too.

In fact, I think the noise is better (less) when it's cold- which makes me think it's some kind of coolant pump.

My dealer said the transmission oil level was normal. I don't have the space or skills or do the transmission fluid drain and fill. Will the dealer do it if I ask them to?

Small chance it's the serpentine belt tensioner or the belt itself. There's only one coolant pump, it's on the front of the engine, and long before it will make any noise at all, it will be leaking like a sieve. Saying the transmission level is "normal" is total BS. There's only one way to check it and it requires adding fluid.

Few things here, lob is correct. Unless they did a Trans fill, temp check, overflow procedure then that's now how you confirm the Trans fluid level correctness. Yes could also be a blt and pulley, in fact could be alternator pulley whine, or any other pulley on the belt.

A old trick to pin point you can do is get a pipe, like a PVC pipe. Put it to you ear with the engine running. Move it different places among and listen to see where its coming from. If you can't tell and it sounds deeper in, a good guess would be the Trans fluid and front Trans pump.

Did you not ask about and point out the whine to whoever said the Trans fluid was ok?

Update: the weather has been cold (20-40F) and the noise has reduced substantially. I also turn off the ASD whenever I drive which seems to lessen the noise. I have been really enjoying the V8 sound without the whining sound.

It's very noticeable when cold, but mostly goes away when warmed up, OR it makes noise most of the time because the fluid level is a little low, pretty much the same as old school power steering.
This right here. Get it checked.
