Leaking Front Strut on 2013 F-Sport
I was at the Lexus Stealership today. They did the typical inspection on my car and said the front strut is leaking. They wanted over $800.00 to replace. Any suggestions on the best route? If I have to spend this, do you buck up and go with Coil-overs? Can you get aftermarket struts for an F-Sport. I don't care about lowering the car. It now has 57,000 miles. Is this urgent? How long can i wait? Any input would help.

Some struts can leak so little that it really makes no difference in the strut's operation...and there would be no real difference between the strut that had leaked a minimal amount of oil and a brand new one. On the other hand, depending on how much oil was leaked, the strut could be toast.

Both front struts on my 2013 F Sport leaked (at different times). It was under warranty so I did not have to pay anything. From my experience and other peoples pictures which have been posted here, it seems like the struts on our cars weep but don't fully fail. The ride difference from my leaking struts and the new struts was unnoticeable. So either I caught the leaking very early or the leaking was so slow, it would have taken quite a while to get to a noticeable loss of damping.
The 'danger' in a failed strut is less control of the car in cornering or braking due to wheel skip/hop because of the lack of damping of the spring response. We have all seen that car driving down the freeway with one of the wheels hopping up and down on the road but the other wheels look fine or the car that hits a bump and keeps bouncing up and down for several seconds because there is no spring damping.
