Default Is Lexus killing (discontinuing) the GS Line ? (Merged threads)

So recent articles suggested Lexus might discontinues the GS. For all of the reasons they mentioned, I think it's absurd, but nevertheless, it's good to hear what everybody thinks.

For me, as previous owner of ES350 UL, ES300h, and now GS350 F-Sport (plus other RX, RXh), I think it doesn't make any sense for Lexus to use the ES as a midsize offering for GS. ES is a great vehicle, but its mission is different than the GS. Yes, GS doesn't sell well, but it hard to believe Lexus spent millions on RC an LC to convey their sporty image, now abandon an important segment to go back again to the same narrative. Even if GS doesn't sell, and loses money, Lexus must have them to answer Mercedes E and BMW 5-Series.

Thoughts?

If anything, I believe the following Lexus models will discontinue (in order):

1. CT - will be replaced by UX
2. RC - probably going to last one generation (albeit a long one - 8 years)
3. LC - one generation (yes, it's not out yet, but I see it's a 1 generation like the SC, 8-10 years)
4. GX - if the redesign gets to LX price caterogy.

We have a few threads on this, the largest of which is in Car Chat.

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/car...e-gs-line.html

The myth has been debunked. A 5GS is coming for 2019.

I agree plus I believe it has a void in between GS350 and GSF ."F sport badge" isn't enough to fuel the sporty feel, lacking the power, handling and sound but everything else I'm happy with.

to be fair, the 350 F Sport handles better than the 535i M Sport and have very similar performance stats...

The CT is good but I just wish they offer it with the 2.0 Turbo option instead of only hybrid. CT 200t would be nice.

I think Lexus is too afraid CT200t will hurt IS200t sales.

I agree with your list except 2. RC. I think they will keep a entry level coupe/RC for several generations especially if the LC only lasts one generation which is likely. Lexus will want to offer at least one 2 door and a entry level or semi entry level coupe does not require big investment that makes it cost prohibitive to offer a vehicle in that segment. The RC coupe sells fairly well for non BMW or Mercedes coupe and if they addressed some styling issues of it and put a 6 cylinder with more power I think it would sell even better.

Getting rid of the GS would be a incredibly foolish move and I don't believe it, if they are mostly complaining about low sales of the GS what about sales of the LS which are very low, much lower then the GS and they just did a new LS. If they were going to drop a sedan I think it would be more likely they would drop the LS then GS though I don't think they should drop either. Not every luxury company has a full sized flagship competitor but they all have mid size lux competitors. Lexus absolutely needs a mid level sedan and a awd ES is not going to work. Fix what is wrong with the GS, don't just kill it.

LC is officially added to the Lexus page, starting at 92 Grand, Hybrid starts at 96 Grand. Who's gonna buy that?

If anything, I would think they would stop production of the GS-F V8 sedan. There are a ton of used ones all over the classifieds, it would appear the car doesn't deliver enough bang for the buck. I could be wrong but, there are a lot of them for sale out there.

If they discontinue GS, I'll buy E-class. I'm not interested in SUVs and LS is too big and out of my budget. Bye bye Lexus?

ES is not on European market, so the only sedans will be IS and LS? Quite crazy step.

Again, the GS is not being discontinued. It was just a rumor.

Default Lexus GS might be discontinued

I read this article and it talks about Lexus potentially discontinuing the development of the next GS. I was surprised by this.

The author doesn't really say anything other than an anonymous source. Click-Bait. I can't see Lexus without a competitor in the 3-series/C-Class (thus ES is safe) or the 5-Series/E-Class (thus GS) nor the 7-series/S-Class (thus LS). Add in Audi A4/A6/A8 to the equation. To be considered a luxury brand they these are the segments. Now is the segment is quit by multiple, but nothing is showing that situation. Does anyone believe that if they drop the GS in it's current form, they won't replace it with another vehicle in this segment?

Possible, but I find it highly unlikely and disappointing. I was planning on my next car being the next gen GS.

I haven't looked at recent sales numbers, but they can't be very impressive. I'm in the SF bay area and I just saw my first 2016 update GS F Sport on the road last week. So glad I bought the '15; can't stand those semi-clear taillights.
