Yes i do believe that is because it is Hybrid
My last Veh a 2010 450h was quicker on acceleration than the mk4 but still plenty quick enough for me so never gave that another thought
bonus is that it is better on fuel i get 45/50 mpg regulary but the mk 3 wasa always around 35
but still love the thing
Thanks for speedy replies

Just from research from when I purchased my 2017 GS350: The 2GR-FXS uses electric motors for variable valve timing whereas the FSE uses solenoids and hydraulic pressure. This allows the FXS to operate in both conventional OTTO mode as well as Atkinson mode. Atkinson mode keeps the intake valves open during part of the compression stroke to reduce friction and improve gas mileage. I believe they introduced the 2GR-FXS in 2016 for all models of the GS350.. not just the hybrid. I believe the FXS is a less mechanically complicated motor as well.
On a side note, the 8 speed transmission is not as quick as the older 6 speed. On the GS350, there is a "haul ***" switch (not sure what it is really called). You push down on the gas pedal and when you feel like it won't go any further, push a little bit harder. It will travel another 1/4" or so. This will cause the transmission to kick down to the lowest gear possible for the given RPM.
EDIT: FKS not FKE
