Gas saving stopping.....

Driving and still enjoying the car after a light year of mileage do to Covid. Compared to my ex 2013 535i (RWD, 6 sod Manual) the gas mileage Still is not great. Abut 18-19 city mpg. coming up on 12 months and only 5700. Miles on the ODO!

Dawned on me my BMW had auto stop engine as gas saving measure. Never really loved it but it was harmless (no starter issues at least) and perhaps it was effective. Curious why Lexus did not employ this technology. My GS is a 2020 F-Sport AWD. Not complaining, for the money I think this car is fantastic!!!!

It's rated at 19 in the city - so you are getting what's advertised.

Me personally, i have ZERO interest in start/stop to save 1 or 2 mpg. You are talking about saving $1 on a tank of gas. The additional wear and tear on the engine is not worth it at all IMHO.

Lexus/Toyota didn't employ the start/stop technology because they believe that the US customer would not like the vibration associated when the engine stops or starts. Just as how American's wants big V8s in these cars.Old school thinking......I believe the JDM and EU marketed Lexus/Toyotas have Start/Stop as an option. I know I have seen them advertised on their respective website.

I know Toyota has added a stop/start system to the Highlander (in 2017) and the RAV4 (for 2021) but I don't think they have put it in any other products (other than hybrids, but that's not really comparable). I'm actually pretty thankful that I don't have it in my GS. I've never driven a vehicle with it where I wasn't supremely annoyed with it.

Yeah, I heard that on some cars at the stop lights and didn't like the sound of that. Prius does that but it's hybrid and good thing my GS doesn't have it.

I’ve driven BMWs with that feature, I’m not a fan. I’m all for its inclusion if it can be turned off permanently if the driver chooses. Most cars I’ve seen it on, you have to turn it off each time you start the car. Annoying.

I drove a 2019 Highlander Limited and was very impressed with the start and stop technology. You literally don't even feel the car restarting itself. I wish the GS had it. With the way I drive and Chicago traffic, I average like 12 to 13MPG only.

That's really good to hear, as I haven't driven a Toyota product with it. It's really bad on my father-in-law's Durango.

Every car i've driven that has the feature immediately gets it turned off. I'll donate my extra $2 to the gas company to avoid this dumb feature.

ItzFilyO Dec 21, 2020 10:27 AM

Yeah how much MPG and $$$ are we saving with this feature anyway? Or is it more like "Hey, here's a new feature for the auto industry?" Like LED DRL when it first came out.

Thing is - they typically put in higher duty starter and stronger battery when a car has auto start-stop.

I always turn it off though...

Found the technology has improved from 2013 and had driven newer BMW’s were it felt near seamless. At one point it stopped working and then when it was time to get new battery at 5 years it came back. I’m not complaining btw, its a matter of discussion.
That a car in 2020 does not have it is interesting. Fuel/emissions and carbon footprint are all concerns even if its not just the money of saved fuel.
I know what I bought and did so without regret. I try to combine my errands and save in other ways. But every little bit counts.

Make only right hand turns like a UPS driver! :) I typically plan my routes as well. Not for cost savings, but for sanity savings. There is a lot of people that can't drive out there.

ItzFilyO Dec 21, 2020 11:56 AM

Now that u mentioned it, UPS trucks do only make right turns on their routes! :D

If you're that sold on this brilliant technology, I'd highly recommend shutting your car off at every red light so you can mimic this feature that everyone raves about.
