Recently the check engine light came on with code p0420 causing it.
I took the car to a mechanic and we checked the exhaust system and it had no leaks, the o2 sensors are working properly and the catalyst converters have no issues.
what else can cause the problem

I see that you are 'Outside US and Canada'. It may be the gasoline quality you are using. Quite often the CEL will clear itself after x number of cycles (startups and drives).
